Legion Field will stay around for the unseeable future. I'm pretty sure the Magic City Classic will still be played there and some of the city council members are still trying to make it useful for other events.

Plus it is probably at least $40M to tear down and haul away...

I was skeptical of the construction schedule but seeing the 90% completion I am greatly impressed. I wish my projects went that smoothly.
Yeah most folks had their doubts, myself included. I mean demolishing the existing clam shells and building the entire east and west sides, ribbon display boards, new scoreboard, sound upgrades in one off season is a heck of a work and they pulled it off with working over weekends, holidays and 16 hour shifts on days and all of these taking into account weather delays. As it stands 95% of work will be complete before the season opener and rest of the work is really aesthetics and some internal work which isn't gonna be a show stopper and they have like 4 weeks after the season opener to get that 5% taken care of. All in all they have done an incredible job in one off season.
Not yet complete, but this is the new practice field (before the bubble goes on top of it) out at UMass (this is in what was a previously mostly unused field right next to the stadium):

hope they raise the ground level so it doesn't flood when there's a monsoon deluge...
They did a great job looks like it was built all at once not three or four phases. I think seventy million is close to the total .
It will be perfect for the bowl game 19,394 seats 20,000 SRO.
I could see a MAC vs SBC or C-USA game selling out and looking good.
A lot of those teams fans visit Myrtle Beach anyway. Being on the smaller side helps Coastal build its fan base.CCU has a perfect set up with most students having an easy walk to the stadium and arena.
Quote:The resounding takeaway is that, unless something has dramatically changed in recent weeks, the university really doesn’t know how it is going to pay for this stadium. That was true before the vote, after the vote and likely to this day.
What will SDSU do if they can't raise enough money to build a brand-new stadium, or if they decide there are better uses for the money they do raise?
Not surprisingly, the answer is: Keep using the existing stadium.
Quote:SDSU’s draft Environmental Impact Report, which it had to prepare to comply with the California Environmental Quality Act, has an interesting idea: Don’t build a new stadium.
Here’s what it says:
“Stadium Re-Use Alternative.” The Stadium Re-Use Alternative would restore SDCCU Stadium to the original configuration of approximately 51,000 seats, as first constructed in 1968. Under this alternative, the proposed project would be re-configured around the existing Stadium to achieve similar land uses and intensities as the proposed project to the extent feasible based on existing grade and topography, and accommodating the floodplain.
That would seem weird that thy do not know. The property though is the thing. It gives them a host of options. I can tell you that as late as maybe 2014 our President at an alumni e emt mentioned razing Turner Field and building an erector set on the North portion of their property, in an alumni meeting. Cooler heads prevailed. The real decision will come in a few weeks or months. But I assure you that the President of SDSU privately knows how many $$$ he has to work with and where they are coming from.

Obviously it's a much more cost effective option to renovate/reuse the existing stadium, as Georgia State did.
Maybe SDSU will do that. Or maybe they have already lined up all the financing for tearing down the old stadium and building a new one. Maybe they just don't want to make their plans public until after they have completed purchasing the land from the city.
