Did not take them long to clean up all the debris from the demolition of Blue Ridge Hall.

Wonder if they will start work immediately on the parking garage or the arena building first?

RE: Union Bank & Trust Center Webcam
If I had to put a number on it ( and I have just as much experience as Jeff Bourne building a new college basketball arena ) I think 6,500 seats is an optimal number. Maybe others like the 8500 number and the reduced home court advantage it will bring with it playing in a more cavernous facility with tarps over the upper deck. All the stats verify home court advantage is HUGE in college basketball.

But with 6500 seats you would have to put the stupid blank wall behind a baseline so end stage events like concerts and graduations lose hardly any seats to obstruction. Think more of a horseshoe shape like UVA’s jewel the JPJ. Most end stage events put 1500 fold out chairs on the floor which gets you to 8,000 max capacity on those events.
Harrisonburg is a tiny market and will rarely sell out hoops games or the 2nd tier events they will be able to book in the valley.

Regarding premium seating, JMU can’t miss the boat on the design. Premium seating revenue is approaching half of total revenue and continues to trend up. Many existing arenas have reduced capacity of John Q Public seats to increase space for more premium seat options.

“Fact: In 1990, premium seating in the United States was a minor topic, with only 3% of seats considered ‘premium’. Today, 28 years later, premium seating in a new build is generally around 20% of the seats and often above 40% of the ticket revenue.” SportsVenueBusiness

Gotta pay for that $88 million price tag and corporations will ante up for premium seating options as long as there is flex with secondary market resale options. Just a Duke Club room and courtside seating is not enough.

Hart, I don't know what you do for a living, and I really don't care, and you're entitled to "Monday Morning Quarterback" your opinion about the number of seats that WILL be in the new arena. That said, its like you haven't even read, much less acknowledged, the very substantial and excellent points made on this thread by your fellow JMU faithful. This arena isn't just about being a basketball facility. The few dates Basketball (men and women) play in the arena won't pay for the facility. This new facility had to be designed to accommodate far larger audiences to host a far wider-range of potential users. From my "Monday Morning QB" seat I'm actually surprised it won't seat 10k.

agreed.

Hart, i respect your opinion, you're certainly entitled to it. but i also am not going to just assume that we can't sell out the arena even for basketball. could we do that tomorrow? of course not. but again, this arena isn't just for a few years, it's going to be around for many decades. why are we just going to assume that we can't fill it up (or come close)? as others have stated, it's for much more than basketball but i'm not willing to concede that we're going to have tons of empty seats for forever. i'm planning on our program improving and thus, attendance increasing. your argument seems to indicate you don't believe that will happen.

If there's anything JMU gets right, it's building stuff. Whether it be for an athletic event, academic building, dining, residential.
When has JMU ever made a mistake when it came to building something?
They know what they're doing.

You must be fairly young, do you know the history of the construction of The Convocation Center? Though, they actually did make some fairly good chicken salad out of the original plan for the structure. It's just never been what we would have liked to have for our basketball programs and other events.

If by fairly young you mean almost 40, then yes I am.
While we're at it, let's argue about the size of the tunnels under the Quad. Or how about old Bridgeforth?
The Convo opened in 82. Times change. I don't think those in charge of the latest buildings were making those decisions in the 70s-80s, not to mention the change in architects used. Of course now that it's out of date we like to call it a shithole, but I doubt people at the time felt it was an incredible disaster.

The CURRENT administration and those in charge of building have been crushing it.
New Bridgeforth, Baseball/softball fields, Field Hockey Complex
All of ISAT(academic, residential, dining), new Bookstore, UREC and add-ons, Performing Arts Center, D-Hub, etc.
All recent projects and every last one of them has been a huge success.
So RECENTLY, what construction projects has JMU screwed up?

I guess in 30 years we may feel differently and we can make fun of how awful they are, but right now they fit the needs for JMU and for the near future.

Oh to be 40 again, and have that much spunk. Heck, I wouldn't mind being my age, 60, and get it on like that again. Had no idea referring to someone as young would bring out such passion. Good for you, keep it going.

Whether I'm 40 or 140 I will still have that passion, as I'm sure you do or you wouldn't have taken the time to respond in the first place.

Hoping with a new arena will come improvements in concessions offerings too. Perhaps some partnerships with local restaurants to upgrade from the predictable hot dog, pizza slices and burger offerings. For example, I know some might not be interested in ice cream during cold winter-hoops season, but I can devour some Kline's ice cream any day of the year. Maybe some tap take-overs by local breweries at the bar area. Definitely some good BBQ sammiches. I'll stop now. I'm getting hungry. Sorry.

Just bring in some of that popcorn found at most local HS basketball games.......best bang for a buck around, so to speak.

Although all of your suggestions sound better, there is going to be a raisin canes chicken tenders fast food joint in it. It’s something.

Are there any renderings of what the indoor convo will look like in terms of a practice facility?

Yes, that's a start. I had forgotten about that at the initial release. I hope they offer some Waffle House chili. Not only will that be good on a bitter cold January night when racing over after work to get there just before tip, but I can go sit down with the opposing fans and ravage them with a series of post-chili blue flamers which will decrease their abilities to root. Hey, I'm a good fan, do whatever I can to help the Dukes by utilizing the superior abilities Buddha has provided me. 04-cheers

This x1000.......While JMU may not do everything perfect.....in the last 30 years they can build some damn nice facilities and I don't think have missed the 'mark' once. I mean it is not like Jeff Bourne is sitting up there in his office drawing up these plans on his whiteboard in a vacuum.........like say the HartFoundation does.

With this new facility JMU should immediately throw their hat in the ring to host the VHSL boys/girls basketball finals like VCU does at the Seigal Center. That thing is a logistics nightmare right on Broad Street. Somewhere like the new arena at JMU would be much more desireable IMO.

I think that's a great idea to help increase recruiting profile locally as well. Basically a free campus visit for prospective VA players during the regular season. I liked going to some of the regional games hosted at the convo a few years back too.
