you might not like the guy, but geez give him some credit.
To use your logic it did not matter who we hired to coach basketball for the last 25 years.....it may have made a difference, but then again maybe it would not have made a difference....We'll never know.
I understand he’s the well-greased political insider in our admin who has gotten us support in the general assembly. You were the one who stated it wouldn’t have happened without him. I just think that goes too far.
Since you often like to cut out critical parts of posts here is what I actually said.
"You guys can make fun of and criticize Charlie King all you want but without him JMU would not have many of the new facilities that have been built of substantially upgraded over the last 10 years.
Be careful what you wish for b/c when he retires soon there is no idea of who the next person will be...."
I never said specifically the AUB Center which is what you implied.....but if you think ALL the campus improvements over the last 10 years would have happened without Charlie King you are delusional. Like him, don't like him....I could care less....but that man secures the money and financing to build everything on that campus that everyone enjoys.
Calm down, dude. It was a harmless joke about his pants, not the person. Sheesh. Product of today's society. Can't have fun with anything without somebody pretending to be offended.
Nah dude, you calm down and pipe down.....Don't tell me what to do and talk to me like I am your kid behind a keyboard. Nah you are a product of today's society that hide behind questionable humor to take shots at someone based on what, their appearance. I am not offended, I am just fed up with the constant CK bashing which often masquerade as humor.
I am just fed up with all these supposedly 'knowledgeable' posters who like to take shots at CK every chance they get on every single thread. It gets kind of old coming from folks who talk like they should know more, but based on their comments really have no idea what CK does, is responsible for, or have ever even met the man.
I could similarly claim that people who support CK are either his subordinate employees or blinded by some personal relationship they’ve developed. My claim wouldn’t be definitively correct, just as the claim in your final sentence isn’t some sort of fact.
Thanks for posting the link. Building is going to be great once it is done.
One of Murphy's Laws states that in any project the first 90% of the work takes 90% of the time and the last 10% of the work takes the other 90% of the time. Seems that they are definitely in the last 10% of the work portion. Still seems like there is a lot to do, hope they can get it all done on schedule. The finishing work that they are involved in right now always seems to take a lot of time due to the precision work that is required as it is what everyone sees.
Wow! Definitely coming along. Looks like all the rough-in stuff is done, now it's down to flooring, ceiling tiles, paint, furniture, and fixtures. It almost looks like they could put some hoops up and the practice gym would be ready to use.
Watching the construction of something like this is interesting. The first several months are so exciting because the frame and structure are going up. Then it's several months of much less exciting stuff from a visual standpoint, so we're all just waiting for that stage to finish. Then the last few months are awesome because it's starting to look 'real' and get finished.
Thanks for posting. I know pictures are deceiving, and obviously not an issue, but the ceiling in the main arena seems very low to accommodate the scoreboard.
That aspect in arenas always interests me as well. I was way too interested in the possibility of punts hitting the giant screens at Jerry-World when it opened.
I've only been to 2 games at UD, but I'd have to agree. I don't know if it's the building or the crowd just doesn't have much enthusiasm or perhaps a combination of both. It's kind of like watching a pick-up game at a random gym. Not a bad building for sight lines and such, but there's really no atmosphere at all.

The one thing I hope they planned for was - making building acoustics as loud as possible.
UD = buffer zone - quietest arena I've heard.
VCU = building generated acoustics average at best. (Sellouts make it above average loud, but building acoustics not that great.)
Mason Rent a Center = above average building acoustics.
Convo = acoustic wise, as loud as I've heard.
If you had the same 500 fans in each building they would be loudest in
1) Convo
next
2) Mason
next
3) VCU
last
4) UD
If the arena is going to host concerts I hope the acoustics are better than the Convo. The Convo was loud because it was a tin can and sound just bounced off of metal walls and ceilings. Maybe that’s good for sporting events, but it makes for lousy concerts.

Yes, the two things can be at odds. "Tin can" buildings with hard surfaces where sound reflects are great for producing a home advantage, whether its the convo or the fargodome. Those characteristics are not great acoustically for concerts, where you would prefer to have some sound absorption at the walls. Reflected sound amplifies noise, but can reduce sound quality. I favor having some tin can effects myself for sports arenas.
In the video, they both talked about the steep seating and how vertical it was. IMO, that is a sign that it is going to be loud in there. In a way it reminds me a bit of George Mason's arena. I've been there several times and I recall it being pretty loud there. I don't think the AUB seats as much, but it does look like the AUB has the upper deck more on top of the action than at GMU. As was mentioned, there aren't walls where the sound will get swallowed up so I think we're good there.
I think there are two major factors in terms of the buildings acoustics- seating (which appears to be on point) and the roof.
I think the roof is going to be the reason that place is as loud or quiet as it will be. I cannot imagine that they did not consider acoustics in relation to an arena. Especially when they are planning to have concerts in there. It doesn't matter how many seats you have for a concert if the place sounds like garbage. I've got to believe they seriously considered sound and its impact in there.
I'm really going out on a limb here, but I am basing this on previous builds. I really believe the AUB is going to be LOUD. And not only will it be loud, but a great venue for concerts. They have knocked it out of the park with practically every single thing that's been built at JMU. And this arena is a big, big deal for JMU. Not only is it good for JMU, but for Harrisonburg. To go through all this time and build a place where it would either: a) sound quiet, or b) sound terrible.... I just cannot fathom them screwing it up. And either of those would be a massive mistake. There's nothing to indicate that they would make a mistake that big.

Am I the only one that when they see UAB their mind goes directly to University of Alabama at Birmingham? I go through - "how does UAB fit into this discussion?" and then go "ooooooohhhh the new arena"
