Supreme Court paves way for possible legalized sports gambling
They sided with New Jersey and stated (either 5-4 or 7-2, I've seen it listed both ways) that a 25-year-old federal law that has effectively prohibited sports betting outside Nevada by forcing states to keep prohibitions on the books is unconstitutional. The ruling could set the stage for other states to expand legalized gambling as a source of government revenue.

So we could see states allow sports gambling at certain places (my guess would be existing casinos). And online gambling sites would be able to have a physical address in the states that allow it (which currently is just Nevada).

I'm kind of torn on this one - I see good and bad things affecting the sports. But I doubt it will lead to new sports gambling 'stores' (like the OTB sites in New York for horse track wagering). Again, I could see existing casinos open up sports books in states that allow sports wagering. And an online sports betting site isn't going to move its physical location to a US state unless they offer up some incredible tax benefits?

Any bets which states will be the first to pass sports gambling laws? New Jersey would be one for sure. Louisiana would be my guess for another.

You can bet that all the sports leagues and certain large college conferences just took notice.

If states start legalizing sports booking, you can bet they'll try and get a taste.

Says here Monmouth Park in New Jersey may have sports gambling in operation within 2 weeks.

Three other states — Mississippi, Pennsylvania and West Virginia — recently passed laws that would allow sports betting contingent on the Supreme Court invalidating PASPA. With that outcome now having been achieved, those three states could be in a position to implement their sports gambling laws within the next 60 to 90 days.

And as many as six-to-10 states are expected to legalize sports betting in time for the beginning of the 2018 NFL regular season.

(and yes, I would absolutely agree that the 4 big professional sports leagues and perhaps the NCAA are going to ask for a cut of the action).

Also from that NY Post story...

Additionally, the NBA and MLB are seeking a fee tied to the total amount of all legal wagering on their contests. The leagues believe a fee is appropriate because the casinos will be profiting off of their product, to account for the risks and potential damage to the reputation of sports if a scandal emerged and to compensate the leagues for the costs of increased integrity monitoring under a new era of widespread, public betting.

The leagues are also advocating for state statutory provisions that would require sports betting operators use the leagues’ “official data” to settle all bets and wagers. The leagues also want to be given the power to restrict wagers on their own contests, because they believe certain types of bets are more susceptible to manipulation than others, like minor league games or bets on who commits the first foul in a game.

Would be nice if Casinos opened sports books. There is a Casino about 1 minute from my house. I would probably hit that up a little more during football season.

Yeah, I think he's still in prison. He had chances to clean himself up. He just kept jumping into that hole of his. Time after time.

He was actually doing pretty well for a few years too. He was an all Arena League QB in the early 90's and making decent money and then he threw it all away. Again.

Just a thought....

If sports gambling is now legal and the various leagues find a way to skim a percentage from the states (like MLB), would that open the door for Pete Rose to finally get into the Hall where he belongs?

Didnt he bet on games that he played in? I believe that was the big issue.

I think you're right, they accused him of betting on games he played in.

Question then becomes, if MLB starts getting $$$ from betting on games and the MLBPA decides they want their cut for the players, wouldn't in fact those players be profiting from games they played in via betting?

Sure, they might not have placed the actual bet, but the term hypocrite could come into the discussion.

Seems like a great argument to have the next time you're bellied up to the bar.

legalizing has nothing to do with corruption other than one would be a dumbarse to do it on the grid....

if one wants to toss a game vs. spread, legalized sports books would the last place you go....

Art and Pete were just stupid in their position....

regardless, off the grid sports books are going nowhere....
