For Alabama it still would require legislation to allow sports gambling in the state.

Won't happen in Alabama, though...

Years ago, I heard that Alabama was a leading state in illegal sports betting through "bookies". As long as gaming does not threaten the 2nd Amendment and citizens shooting one another (WE'RE #2 IN AMERICA, WE'RE #2), nothing is likely to change. We can see in the campaigns leading up to the June primaries, every candidate describes themselves as "gun rights protecting Christian conservatives" so gaming legislation is not likely to have much push in Montgomery.

Something tells me that the UAB related candidate will add this to his agenda on the campaign trail.

Could be a good thing for CUSA.
Any betting option is somewhat equally valued.
Bettors will be watching on TV to see outcome. More eyes means more money
The fact is you can win just as much betting on/against CUSA as SEC/ACC/B10/...

Sports gaming - or any other kind for that matter - would require an act of the state legislature and then a yes vote on an additional Constitutional amendment just to give the state legislature the power in the next session to set up by statute a particular form of gaming (lottery, casino, sports, etc).

Now it is possible that the Poarch Creek Indians might add that to their list of gaming attractions since they are not bound by state laws on gaming (as found out by then AG Luther Strange when he tried to "strong arm" them to obey state law on electronic Bingo machines).

The perpetual seat licenses at Legion Field include a no gambling clause.

Thinking outside the box without any regard for the encouragement/discouragement of vices...

If a UAB booster organization was a legalized bet-taking company, with the unique caveat that betting on UAB was slightly encouraged, would the increased following and rooting for UAB (and gambling interest) by said gamblers pay for the theoretical losses of tilting the odds?

Ex: UAB gets subtracted 1 point compared to the Vegas odds, so if UAB is favored to win by 2.5 in Vegas, this UAB booster gambling company would reward people who bet on UAB +1.5.

It's basically a gimmick to get people to use this service (presumably they would bet on other games as well) as well as generate some buzz about the teams. Is it worth the risks and would this ever be legal and/or acceptable for a university to take money from such boosters?

Now that Milton Macgregor has "left the building", who is the "face" of gaming in Alabama? Is it possible that without Milton to kick around any more, some new guy may come forward and have greater success moving the state into state regulated gaming?

The porch Creek Indians control the Alabama Republican party and a lot of the Dems. They(PCIs) have refused to even allow a lottery to come to a vote. No sport betting will be allowed elsewhere in Alabama

Do the PCI have online sports betting? They can't monopolize that, and it's about to explode. Alabama can try legislating it, but it will cost more money to regulate it than what they can claim. Even with perfect enforcement, Alabamians will just go to a neighboring state on Saturdays (like some do with the lottery in Georgia, but likely worse) to place their bets (or just call a buddy across the state line to make the bet for them).

With college sports being such a huge deal in Alabama, this is a bigger deal than the lottery.

The PCI in Florida negotiated an agreement to voluntarily pay the state of Florida out of their profits in lieu of taxes. When this approach was suggested to the (Republican) Governors Riley and Bentley, it met with total indifference. The PCI of Alabama do make voluntary contributions to some local charities, but the state refuses to meet with them at all. The past state AG Strange tried to strong arm them over using Bingo machines like he was able to do at Victoryland, but they told him (nicely) where he could cram it.

Based on the state's cooperation with other US SC rulings they don't like, I expect the state will try to subvert and resist this ruling as well.

The Supreme Court ruled it was up to the state. If the leaders want to be hard headed about it, they can choose to do so. They aren’t working around any ruling by doing so.

This state had a lottery all but passed until churches got involved at the last minute. I have hope we might try to find a way to make sports betting work.

Apparently the Mississippi legislature was proactive (when has that ever been said) and have already passed the necessary legislation before the Supreme Court made their ruling. Someone on Memphis radio said he was 99.5% sure that sports betting will be available this fall in Mississippi casinos.

However there is also talk that unless they make it available online, it will likely not be as successful as it should. Many gamblers will choose to remain with their off shore bookies rather than have to physically go to a casino to place a bet.

To offset that, casinos could offer creative in-game bets such as betting on individual plays etc.

Imagine the odds you could have got on a Garrick McGee kick off both halves bet.

They’ll continue to lose business to the MS casinos now

The US SC has done in regard to gaming practices what the 21st Amendment did in 1933 with regard to the 18th Amendment. It ended national prohibition and turned the problem over to the individual states to decide for themselves by local options. Today you have "dry" and "wet" municipalities in several states (the TN county where Jack Daniels is made is a dry county - they can make it but not sell or drink it).

Will we see the same practices with gaming laws with local variations across the various states? Some counties / cities "wet" and some counties / cities "dry"?
