Wondered what happened to Robert. Never saw his name on any NFL rating or tryout list

He didn't have a very good senior year, beginning with his ill-fated decision to follow Fleck to Minnesota.

Those illegal texts will get you every time.

Agreed, his name was rarely called last year vs 2016

Different defense guys, slightly different responsibilities.

That is true, but 4-3 is designed to make MLBer a star. Thought he would've fit that role perfectly.

He just seemed to play uninspired football most of the year.

That’s what I saw... seemed to lose the fire for Bronco football when PJ left.

Heard from several that he did a lot of pouting in the locker room and meeting rooms. No leadership.

Very understandable. Those returning vets gave their heart and soul to PJ and were devastated he'd leave them to be a Gopher. Robert Spillane gave a lot over the years though and that transition year had to happen. New era now though. Wish him the best.

Not sure how 92 TOT in a transition year with questionable sideline play-calling equals uninspired football. And pouting? Just no. Thanks for all that you gave to WMU, Robert. All the best on your journey.

He saved our bacon at EMU, it's hard to make goal-line stops when you are lazy—it's hard when you are confident!

He's just not a speedy, attacking blitzer. Some guys are just better built for certain schemes. This is just not a defense for helping cover-2 corners, coverage safeties, granite blocks at line, and traditional stuff 'em hard linebackers excel.

I don't think you can call the defensive play-calling questionable, though, the defense saved our offense's bacon in quite a few games. In the MAC, if you have a defense that slows the other team down, that's often enough.

RE: Spillane signs with Titans
Shoot, who knows what would've happened in the MACC if he didn't pick off that pass. We were scared under all that pressure and Ohio was playing with nothing to lose, driving down the field. If OU won, that heartbreaker would've put the 1999 MACC and 2000 CMU games to shame.

And the fumble recovery in the Northwestern game that made it all possible.

So to that end, hats off to Spillane. But on the flip side, I agree with what others have said... He, and probably a handful of other seniors, seemed unable or unwilling to fully adapt to the new staff. Especially once the injuries and losses started piling up. At least that was the perception.

Getting a "tryout" with NFL team is similar to being a walk-on with a college team.

Nevertheless, I hope it works out for Spillane. Made a lot of plays for Broncos over his career, especially in 2016.

Not a tryout any longer. Signed contract to 90 man roster. Vrabel must have seen the grit he gave us for four years. Ranked 8th in all time tackles. Imagine if Spillane didn’t have his knee blown out by that dirty crack back against EMU his sophomore year. Again, without any disparagement, CONGRATS! Yet another Bronco into the majors.

This is awesome. Kind of shows under the right type of coach he finds the motivation to perform at his highest level.

That part about his highest level dang he could dial it up at crunch time. And wasn’t that a pretty gram slogan about always looking for a higher high?
