Meanwhile, MLB is pulling its hair out wondering why every stud pitcher’s elbow is exploding before they turn 25.

Between that and throwing a bunch of breaking stuff before age 12.

I don't think kids throw enough. That is the problem. These kids are playing only baseball, throwing basically only on weekends from February through November. Back when we played, we played all sports. When it was football season, we played football, basketball season, basketball and then when March rolled around we played baseball. If you were lucky you played until around Fourth of July. These kids are pitching year round while they are growing and that is when the damage is being done. Some of these kids are having surgery in their teens. That never happened when we were coming up. If it your turn to pitch, you pitch the whole game. If you start getting sore or tired you get pulled. Simple. If you want stamina while pitching, then you need to throw a lot of pitches when you pitch and then take care of your arm the few days after you pitch so you can be ready for your next turn to pitch. And by the way Damon Pollard threw 166 pitches against MSU on a Tuesday one game in 1990, and then pitched is game on Saturday.

Not that I’m endorsing breaking pitches before puberty by any means, but the newer research isn’t bearing that out as a significant factor. Velocity, workload, and not enough off-season are the more definitively associated culprits.
Putting it bluntly, an arm only has so many pitches in it. UCL tears used to be an “old man injury” that caused guys to retire after lengthy major-league careers (Tommy John was in his 12th season when he got the opportunity to have the surgery named after him). Guys are regularly having it now in their early 20s because they’ve simply used up their allotment that much sooner. Old pros used to pitch their behinds off, yes, but only after they were getting paid. Nolan Ryan & Tom Seaver weren’t playing in 40-game winter travel leagues as 13-year-olds and the NCAA season was only 30-ish games as late as the 1970s.
