My point in bringing up Miami is that they manage reputation by doing more with less. They have effectively managed their niche. UC should figure out how to do the same.

In Dayton, I perceive that OU is favored over UC, as is Miami and OSU. There’s no reason some of that can’t change.

Miami has a big problem: the only college bringing in any money at all is the College of Business. Everyone else leaches off them.

Cincinnati has multiple colleges bringing in money (in order, I think): Medicine, DAAP, Business, Engineering, CCM, and Law. So there's a lot more resources to spread around.

What UC should really do is cut a lot of the lower-ranking humanities departments. That would bring our overall average up while simultaneously freeing up resources to strengthen the remaining non-revenue departments. This is what Princeton does (Princeton does not have a medical, law, or graduate business school).

Our classics department is third in the country and excavating Pompeii, Greece and Egypt. Might want to keep that one.

Isn't every classics department excavating those locations?

RE: 2018 US News & Report Rankings (UC#133)
UC's classics department may be low profile to our larger community but it is one of the gems in the University's crown. World renowned, donor supported for a century or more, and attracting the best faculty and students internationally. So while classics faculty from other universities are digging at Pompeii or elsewhere, UC faculty have had substantial discoveries and contributions to our knowledge of those civilizations.

With similar resources, other A&S departments could rise in the rankings, lifting the University's overall reputation higher. The old truism, "it takes money to make money," might be modified in academia to be, "it takes money to make an academic reputation," and donor support made the classics department world class.

RE: 2018 US News & Report Rankings (UC#133)
CWUR Global Rankings Came Out. Weighted heavily (though not entirely) towards faculty quality and research prowess, these are good indicators of where a school stands on the AAU pecking order.

UC is 204th but 79th in the USA and 47th among US publics. Since, however, eight medical/grad only public schools such as MD Anderson and UC-San Francisco are ranked separately and above UC, removing them would bump UC up to 71st among American comprehensive universities and 41st among publics.

Some comparisons. This includes leaving the med-only schools included. I'm not going to take the time to give public only rankings for all the schools since their formatting doesn't make that easy, and the overall and US public + private number is good enough to grasp where UC stands.

OHIO
OSU 40th/27th-US/12th Public
Case 142nd/61st/NA
UC 204th/79th/47th
Akron 677/170
KSU 687/173
BGSU UNRANKED
Miami 751/180
Toledo 765/183
Ohio 803/186

A couple of takeaways. UC is much closer to Case than most people would have guessed, but much further away from OSU also. Most importantly, there is clearly no other public university in Ohio other than UC in a position to assume the role of the second, comprehensive research university for the entire state. This backs up my contention that UC needs to not pursue Ono's illusory goal of being OSU's co-flagship and start focusing on separating itself fundamentally from all the universities in the system below it and that includes Chicago's safety school in the cornfields north of us.

How we stack up to the bottom publics in the AAU and the top contenders for an invitation.

Current Members
Missouri 190/73
UC 204th/79th/47th
Kansas 223/83/51
SUNY-Buffalo 273/97

Potential Members
Utah 83/48/27
North Carolina State 167/68
UCONN 193/75
UC 204th/79th/47th
Colorado State 244/86
UC-Riverside 245/87

Being better than the bottom AAU publics is clearly not good enough to merit an invite. Also, it's clear (and every other ranking backs this up) that Utah is obviously next one in with NCSU the likely second choice. Until Utah gets their invite, no other public in the country should be thinking that one's just around the corner for them. This latter fact, lays bare the degree to which Ono was talking **** to make himself look good when he said that we were knocking on the door and more importantly when he started making excuses around town that we didn't get in because OSU had all the Big Ten schools vote against us. We're not ready, and we need to do a lot more to get to where Utah is.

Bearcat 1985, thanks for your excellent analysis of this information. I agree with all the conclusions you presented from your research.

I believe the challenge for UC is crafting a compelling case for the Ohio legislature and delivering that relentlessly in the coming years. Ono's strategy was a non-starter; Ohio legislators will never, "rob from Peter (OSU) to pay Paul (UC)".

So a case must be made that Ohio has an opportunity to have two AAU schools. Build that narrative around the economic impact (taxpayer ROI) that another research powerhouse could deliver to a rust belt state desperately in need of new technology-based businesses and jobs. I think that's a story that could get traction with elected officials. It won't be easy and it won't be fast. But it is necessary for UC to continue it's remarkable progress of recent years.

Obviously, I consider him an improvement over Ono, but it's still too early to get a feel for a lot of where he wants to take the university.

The AAU talk has stopped, and there's been a clear emphasis on the university's application for Comprehensive Cancer Center designation. This is all being done quietly and professionally rather than through twitter.

My greatest fear is that, with this emphasis on the cancer center and his engineering background, UC might fall into a trap of building upon our strengths at the expense of shoring up vital and core parts of the university (arts & sciences) that have long been neglected but are vital if UC is to continue on its path to becoming what we all want for it.

The other thing that I'll be eager to see are any initiatives to make UC less of a regional school and more of a statewide school with an additional greater emphasis on more out of state students. It doesn't mean that we need to become Miami and spend millions of dollars trolling the Chicago suburbs for kids who were rejected by the University of Illinois, but we do need to break out of our Republic of Cincinnati mindset.

Overall, I'm pleased so far. If nothing else the change in tone from self-serving carnival barker to quiet, steadied academic professional has been great.

And we're helped by the fact that Cleveland doesn't really have a dog in this fight. they have Case and the Cleveland Clinic in town, and the political and business establishment have always been happy with that, been strong OSU as the flagship supporters while content to maintain KSU & Akron as local regional colleges. That was the lunacy of Ono's uninformed play when he floated out "multiple flagships." He rushed into it with very little understanding of the history and dynamics of Ohio higher education thinking he'd manipulate the Cleveland establishment into supporting him. He never truly understood that Cleveland has always had its flagship public; it just happens to be located in Columbus.

Toledo is an entirely different story. They've always craven what the 3 C's have, and the Toledo Blade has literally written editorials demanding that highly ranked programs at OSU be shut down and divvied up among other public schools (i.e. BGSU & UT). That being said, neither of those two schools are anywhere near what UC is, much less OSU. And Toledo just doesn't have the political juice to stand in the way of something that Cincinnati, Columbus and Cleveland might all be on board with. Not to mention that Toledo's whole "spread the peanut butter evenly across the state" mentality is some backwards **** when it comes to running a higher education system.

Sort of related to this topic:

54% of UC graduates the past decade remain in Greater Cincinnati.
3% to Columbus
2% each to Cleveland, NYC and Chicago

50% of XU grads remain in Greater Cincinnati
8% to Chicago
2% to Columbus, Cleveland and NYC

Only 29% of Miami grads remain in Greater Cincinnati
8.5% to Chicago
7.1% to Columbus
6.5% to Cleveland

I don't have a WSJ subscription, but the article referenced looks interesting. Using the alumni function for universities' pages on LinedIn also gives a good picture of a school's national reach and how broadly their alumni base is spread.
