Honestly, intergalactic could be a nod to Berkman, a former Astro.

Or maybe there's a good high school coach who also works at NASA.

Agreed that the focus was not it being from international, but an acknowledgement of the breadth of the search.

YES! -- totally get this, and it's been so lacking it seems...

No word from the Ft. Worth people? I was there tonight in Dallas along with about 40 others - kind of a light crowd I think. The good news to me is the fact that we're spending so much more this year on salaries and recruiting (I asked Bloom point blank if he got a bigger recruiting budget than Bailiff, and he said "Oh yeah!"). The people I talked to were very pleased with the presentation by Bloomgren (as described by the Austin people above). It's really nice to finally have a head coach and staff that aren't just going through the motions.

Karlgaard thinks one win will get us into the CUSA tourney. I asked him about getting some gray into the uniforms and he acted like I was the first person to bring this up, and that he would take it under advisement. Come on folks, push for the gray!

Report from my dad (Wiess '83) attending Fort Worth (not particularly detail-filled):

Quote: It was good. Karlgaard and Bloomgren gave good presentations, and [high school classmate of his]'s son signed with Rice. Chris and Laura Shoppa have a house in Rivercrest, so it was a good location. We had a good time.

I would have gone (I was one of the attendees of the first FW caravan stop), but I'm on the east coast now, so...

baseball has a $20,000 recruiting budget....yay!!!! That's why we can't recruit like Wakeforest!!! You know, the team JK/heisenberg insists we should recruit like because they have made a regional two of the last ten years!!!

I was also at the Dallas event. Agree, would have been nice if crowd was a little larger. Maybe they should do just one DFW event in some central location like Grapevine.

One thing that was a bit curious is that every staff person including Bloom's first question to me or the people I was with was what sport we played at Rice. I know a pretty good percentage there were former FB players / athletes so I understand the question. I had to sheepishly reply with "intramural" and "um the MOB."

I was impressed with Bloomgren.

Grapevine is central to where most of the growth is now (Collin County and along Stemmons toward Denton).

IIRC, if you looked at population density, the "center of mass" of the Metro was somewhere around the airport. Not entirely sure on that, though.

Lots of growth in Mansfield, Burleson, Benbrook, Crowley, and points west of Ft Worth, too. Walsh Ranch is going to be giant.

If you draw a line from downtown Dallas to downtown Ft. Worth, the midpoint is in Arlington.

Maybe this is why they hold Dallas and FW separately.

Well, in my opinion even more reason people like us should be applauded -- no reason to be sheepish! We support athletes/athletics even though it wasn't our world.

I played beer bike at Rice. But I didn’t go mostly because I knew it wouldn’t be appropriate to ask Bloomgren if he’d given any thought to his succession plan yet.

I was a beer specialist.

My answer would have been "I was on the Beer - bike team at Will Rice - and I will not be more specific."

Too funny. Wayne wasn't going to travel even with a 100k recruiting budget. It is beneath him. We need a coach who will roll up the sleeves and get active. Need some fresh young blood who is hungry. Hopefully we will find someone without an ego.

Indeed!

My (limited) experience from planning alumni events is that Dallas folks won't go to a Rice event in Fort Worth, Fort Worth folks won't go to a Rice event in Dallas, and no one will go to a Rice event in between.

Eh, from my experience, it was more of a "Dallas folks won't go to a Rice event in Fort Worth, Fort Worth folks don't get invited to Rice events in Dallas." But all in all accurate.
