So tell us how you would handle this differently.

People have first world insanity. No officer has any obligation to protect or serve a groundhog.

Oh I know.

We had a call one night for a single vehicle wreck. Got on scene and found a Lincoln Towncar absolutely totaled. Woman was coming home late that night and swerved to miss a deer and hit the other two that were behind it. Outright killed one of them but the second one was crippled up in the ditch bleating like a demon. Deputy just happened to drive by and stopped to see if we needed ny help until the State Trooper got there and the woman said "Someone needs to take care of that poor hurt deer." The Deputy says "I'll handle it." He then gets his shotgun out of his patrol car and shoots the deer. The woman went absolutely ballistic. At one point she cussed us out for not calling an animal ambulance for the deer like she had seen on TV once. We tried to explain that there was no such thing in our area she said she was going to call the Mayor and Governor to get one started. Of course she took some time from her animal ambulance lobbying efforts to file complaints about us and the Deputy. They obviously went nowhere.

For the record we still do not have an animal ambulance in our area. Mark Sanford was evidently too busy hiking the Appalachian Trail to worry about a boo-boo box for animals.

But was it tasty?

This broad think her KFC, Zaxbys or ribs are coming from a store? As in not an animal or farm?

People be so dumb they be dumb. It's amazing. And

Sad!

If you watch the video, the officer made clear way for the rathog to leave/escape. Instead, it charged the officer. Maybe it had rabies. Something was up because it took two shots at point blank range to take it down LOL. Just wait for the animal rights left to say there should've been more done to protect this wild animal...

Well its not the rabbit off of Monty Python and the holy grail so the holy hand grenade is out. But seriously. Its around breeding season for them. That explains the aggression. Most likely had a female or a den on that side of the road. Just pepper spray toward it and move on.

Breeding season for groundhogs is in February. Last time I checked it's May.

And I'd thoroughly enjoy watching you explain to your supervisor why you used a $25 can of OC spray on an animal acting unnaturally instead of a $1.10 round of ammunition. Right after he reams you a new one for wasting the department money he's going to ask you how you are going to feel when some 8 year old is getting a couple dozen stitches in their leg from a bite and then gets to look forward a series of rabies vaccinations since groundhogs are the rodents most likely to get rabies.

You wear that " Blue Shield nicely". Breeding season is from March to late April. Given the late winter cold snap. It wouldn't be uncommon for it to be altered by a few days. As for Rabies. It's very uncommon for groundhogs to contract the virus.

Quote:Rabies

This is the most common diseases that groundhogs carry.
Symptoms of a rabid groundhog include the presence of foam in the mouth, full or partial paralysis and also aggression. Rabies is a very dangerous disease to human beings and infected people should seek medical attention within the next few hours after infection. However, it should be noted that it is very rare to come across a rabid groundhog, but once you see one, you should steer clear of it and call animal control services if there are many of them.

https://www.cdc.gov/rabies/exposure/animals/other.html

Quote:From 1990 through 1996, in areas of the country where raccoon rabies was enzootic, woodchucks (groundhogs) accounted for 93% of the 371 cases of rabies among rodents reported to CDC.

SO where is rabies enzootic in raccoons?
https://www.cdc.gov/rabies/location/usa/...imals.html

Seems to me that Carroll County, Maryland is such a place.
