This is the shite that worries me now - not work, family life, or how to pay the bills, but the rando dad on the lacrosse team who could sabotage it for all the boys playing ball.

On the flip side, we had a parents meeting recently where we said job one was to win, followed closely by sportsmanship. It got a great response from the parents perhaps that's a refreshing difference from the other sports their kids played.

(Oh and don't be a boys hockey coach in Minnesota. You are guaranteed a toxic coaching environment and, perhaps, social excommunication. People have moved because of it.)

That's ridiculous. It's kids' sports - quit trying to relive your glory days and let them coach/play.

We played one team last season that the parents all ganged up on both the ref AND their coach, calling BS on whatever the ref called against them, and yelling at the coach because he wasn't "getting on the ref" enough. The ref was yelling at the coach to control the parents on his side, the coach was yelling at the parents, etc.

The coach wound up yanking his team off the field mid-game. It was the most immature behavior I've seen from a bunch of parents and coaches ever.

During travel ball one summer we had an opposing manager request that the head umpire eject one of his own parents from the ballpark because of their behavior. After the game he took our coaching staff to the side after the handshake and asked if he could take a minute to speak to our team. We said yes and he apologized to our players for the behavior of his fans.

That's how it should be handled - not a screaming match back & forth and a temper tantrum by the coach like what we witnessed.

Rec does get better once you get to middle school as you have former competitive kids that get burned out or don't want to travel, come back to rec just because they love the sport.

I know that in at least one Little League circuit here in Orlando, parents are not even allowed to cheer or show any emotional reaction during a game.

Booing, cheering, clapping, etc... will be met with ejection and removal from the premises, all at the umpires discretion of course.

Things must get pretty bad when they have to resort to that. Geez.

That's nuts. My son never played baseball. By far the worst group of parents I have come across was swim team. Thank God he only did it one summer and sucked at it. Never again.

I had to volunteer to time one of the meets and watched some dad berate his 8 year old son into hysterical crying because he didn't make the time he wanted... and he won the heat! It was absolutely disgusting. Granted, that was the extreme example, but I'd say 50% of the parents thought their kid was the next Michael Phelps and the other 50% were middle aged has-been housewives there to fill sip on their red Solo cups and get obnoxiously drunk. Add the 95 degree heat and humidity, the flies circling all the food, and the mosquitoes eating the schit out of me and I'll pass next time.

Seeing that kind of insanity is why I love the simplicity, innocence, and outright pluckiness of a one Charlie Brown and his Peanuts gang that never gives up although they lose game after game.

He has a Beagle and a yellow bird on his team but dangit, that's alright by me....

Be glad you aren't involved in girl's tennis. My SLED agent friend said he was sorely tempted to lock up 75% of the cheering section for drunk and disorderly conduct at most meets he went to. Said they were the absolute worst fans he had ever encountered in any sport and he worked as a basketball ref for the City of Columbia recreation when he was in school at South Carolina. He said the words coming out of their mouths after a few Solo cups of chardonnay would have offended the crowds at Hyatt Park in Eau Claire. Luckily for him his oldest daughter quickly lost interest and went into cheer while his youngest daughter stuck with softball.
