The Chinese economy is too dependent upon the US to allow Kim to cause problems.
Im betting they have put very strong backchannel pressure on Kim. Of course it could just be that Kim's nuclear program imploded into the ground and Kim knows it can't be restarted due to lack of cash and resources. Perfect time to be a hero and decide to voluntarily announce an end to it, save face with his people and come out a hero to them.

It is definitely strange. For 25+ years, NK has blackmailed the West with the threat of nuclear conflict, while their patron/sponsor (PRC) pretended to be “concerned”. Not sure what, but something has definitely changed. And while I don’t give Trump all or most of the credit for this, I do think he is viewed by NK and PRC as an unstable, mercurial personality who really and truly WOULD push the proverbial red button if backed into a corner. And this perception, whether true or false (I think it’s true) may have finally persuaded PRC to pass a note to Kim saying “This has gone on long enough. If you want to keep on living, sit down and talk to SK and reach a legitimate compromise.”
