Parrish could create his own shot but he couldn’t make any of them, IMO.

If Mullins can return to his freshman year form, he’s our best guy off the dribble.

Parrish was incredibly efficient and set Rice's all-time record for FG% in a season. He was basically unstoppable driving the ball. If you take out November, he shot 67% (!) on the year as a guard. He was incredibly underrated.

To the original question...Mullins and Moore can periodically create their own shots. Peterson likewise. But you're not going to count on them to consistently break down a defense. Even Murphy was sporadic in his ability to create his own shot. What sucks about Murphy transferring is we're going to miss out on him developing the last few aspects of his game. He's still really, really raw. There's no reason to think that by his senior year he won't be able to consistently beat his man off the dribble.

Most of Parrish’s shots were layups or close to the hoop. He wasn’t much of a threat from deep or mid-range.

Correct me if I’m wrong. You have access to better data than most on this forum.

Oh absolutely, he took one three all year I think. Never an outside threat. But he still created shots for himself in the paint, and was essentially unstoppable when he got a full head of steam. Even if he's not the focal point of an offense, I think guys like Parrish are important for an offense. He had the ability to bail us out of those possessions where we passed the ball aimlessly for 20+ seconds. Beyond Rob, I'm not sure anybody else had/has that ability (Peterson maybe).

I think you're rewriting history a bit. The majority of Parish's drives were on back door or pick and roll passes; not creating the shot himself. Taking absolutely nothing away from Josh, but that was the reality.

Looks like 53% of Josh's shots at the rim were assisted, per the link below. Close to a 50/50 split between assisted and not assisted. But it's also technically an assist if a player gets passed the ball at the top of the key and immediately drives, so it's still hard to tell what percentage of his points came from cuts and P&R. It does look like roughly 6% of his rim makes came from putbacks, so regardless of what's classified as an assist or not, I'd still put my estimate range of unassisted shots at the rim at 40-50%. So I'll concede that the *majority* of his baskets were probably not self-created, but I also think his attacking ability is downplayed. I used to have access to more detailed data but, alas, I no longer do.

RE: 2018-2019 Men's Basketball Recruiting Thread
Josh had plenty of shots he generated on his own - he would get the ball at the top of the key and was able to drive to the basket for a lay-up. Sort of like Mullins his freshman year, and Naija Hunter the year before. It's wrong to say he didn't generate any of those shots himself. We're going to miss that type of player, but we've had players each of Pera's 3 years who specialized in that type of basketball shot/move, and I imagine we'll find someone to fill that role next year. Whether he shoots at a 67 percent shooting clip is doubtful. Parrish was also a decent defensive player. But he's going to have to find the right team in 2020-21, and it will be easier for Murphy to find a program to fit in with than Parrish IMO.

No one said Josh didn't generate shots on his own. My comment was that the majority were on back door or pick and roll passes, usually from Peterson. Also, why it took Josh 1 1/2 years to start driving to the basket is a mystery to almost all ofus. I certainly wouldn't put Josh in the same class as Erica, for example, in creating their own shot with the shot clock winding down. Having said that, few are in Erica's class at that skill set.

Anyone know where Najja Hunter ended up? Can’t find him on any rosters after his season of JuCo.

Another cautionary tale...

Maybe I’ll bump into him at the courts after Cuomo puts the rims back on the hoops in NYC parks.

I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t have been able to stay for academic reasons. Decided to not even try in his classes before transferring.

Letcher-Ellis did the same thing and never became eligible at Nevada (who also took that Rhoades recruit of ours that had to decommit presumably because of grades)

Makes me appreciate all the kids who stay and graduate a lot more.

Back to four available scholarship spots with Peterson transferring. His absence creates a desperate need for shooters.

Looks like there's some interest in Virginia Tech transfer Isaiah Wilkins. He's a 6-3, 230 guard who averaged 4.3 points per game. Shot 28% from 3 this year but 40+% last year. Would have to sit out for a year.

Some other possible names (from Twitter):

Freshman F Jonathan Dos Anjos (Loyola Marymount, 3.2 ppg
Sophomore F Dima Zdor (Weber State, 3.9 ppg)
Sophomore F Ricky Lindo (Maryland, 1.7 ppg)

There was some talk in a thread about Josh Hall (former Rice commit from 2016, I believe):

He will be playing for his 3rd school, I believe.

Correct. He was a 4 star and our highest ranked recruit ever probably.

Committed to Rice. “Backed out” and went to Nevada. 2 seasons at Nevada. Transferred to Missouri State and sat 1/played 1. Grad transfer.

Some names to watch:

> VMI freshman guard Travis Evee. SoCon freshman of the year. Would have to sit out. A bit on the smaller side but can play point or off the ball. Probably garnering some interest from bigger schools, so don't know how realistic (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDlFEEU_xY4)

> 2020 forward Louth Koulibaly from Canada. One of those Canadian recruiting sites signified that there's some interest. 6-8 with a college-ready body. Looks like he plays exclusively in the paint. Wouldn't call him a superb athlete, but he's definitely got athleticism

> Others recent Twitter follows from the coaching staff: Abel Porter (Utah State-Grad), Jake Killingsworth (Columbia-Grad), Tre Clark (Furman-Grad), Mike Wynn (Wake Forest), BJ McLaurin (d2 freshman),

Travis Evee and I went to high school together... Well, kinda. He was in our 7th and 8th grade when I was a junior and senior. He then did a post grad year.. So he’s actually “a year older” than a normal rising sophomore.

From what I hear, he wants to “upgrade” to at least the A-10 level and ideally stay in the northeast.

Inside knowledge, always useful! It seemed like a weird move considering it'd be to a lateral conference and he's from the northeast, but the staff seems to think they have a shot at him.

He'd be a really good pull if we can somehow pull it off. Really good offensive player.

Looks like Boise State transfer Riley Abercrombie committed. He's redshirt freshman, 6-9, originally from Australia but went to school in Houston. Played very sparingly this year. Averaged 4.3 minutes, 1.4 points, and 0.7 rebounds. Will have to sit. Takes us to three scholarships.

In other news, Kendall McHugh committed to Idaho.

Our updated roster for next year (those eligible to play):

1s: Hutchins, Moore
2s: Olivari, Mullins, Sheffield
3s:
4s: Crisler, Abercrombie
5s: Ondigo, Fiedler, Poteat

Abercrombie will have to sit unless he applies for a hardship of some type. While that position is not a need for us, it's always nice to get local kids (he played high school ball at Clear Lake).

McHugh's stats toward the end of the year really went down - I suspect he wasn't high on our list although we do need guards.

Michael Ertel of Louisiana-Monroe is transferring. He was their leading scorer as a junior and academic all-state out of high school in Indianapolis so I think he would be a good one to go after. 6-2 guard who is a very good shooter - something we desperately need now. Grad transfer. They just lost an asst. coach to UAB so I could see UAB going after him big-time.

Did Rice recruit/offer Abercrombie in high school? If so, any idea why he chose Boise over us?

I noticed MacMurray College in Illinois is shutting its doors permanently (500 or so students - D3 school about 2 hours north of St. Louis). They actually have a 6-7 sophomore basketball player named Logan Dorethy who had pretty decent numbers for them (19.3 PPG, 8.6 RPG, shot 60 pct from the field). I think the staff should check him out - he might actually be a decent replacement for Peterson.
