RE: 2018-2019 Men's Basketball Recruiting Thread
Sophomore PG Cameron Parker of Sacred Heart just announced he's transferring. I have no idea if he'd qualify academically, but if there's any chance he would, he'd immediately jump to the top of my board. One of the best passers in the country. Averaged 8+ assists this past year and had 24 in a game earlier this year. Would be a perfect fit in Pera's offense predicated on getting guys good looks from 3.
Beyond the academic thing, I think it's also likely that he'll get enough high major sniffs and end up at a level above Rice. But I still hope the staff does some due diligence on him.

PF Evan Cole is grad-transferring from Georgia Tech averaged 4pts and 3rbs in 12mpg this past season.
I wasn't super impressed with our freshman bigs this season and think we could use reinforcements there in addition to Ondingo.

We also have the 6-9 kid from Georgia. I think those two are enough.

I've heard we've got a point guard committed, but not yet announced and we're also looking for a transfer.

Any insight into who the PG is?

Dylan Arnette of TCU might be another good possibility. He really didn't play much for TCU as a freshman (he's a 6-3 shooting guard from Dallas) but is a really good student (class valedictorian at Dallas Carter, and was 1st-team academic all-Big 12 at TCU). He'll have to sit out a year as a regular transfer (maybe - I suppose the NCAA could waive that requirement for players who didn't play many games?).

Ian DuBose is transferring out of HBU. 6-4 grad transfer who averaged 19/7/4. He had offers from a bunch of Ivy League schools coming out of HS. I imagine he'll return to the Carolinas and/or play for a high major, but I'd think the staff would at least reach out to him. He'd be an immediate impact starter and would give us a scoring punch that we lose with Ako and Rob.

RE: 2018-2019 Men's Basketball Recruiting Thread
With Murphy and Parrish transferring, we now have four open spots. Positional breakdown below (or what I think their ideal positions are):
1: ???
2: Moore, Mullins, Sheffield, Olivari
3: Peterson
4: Crisler
5: Ondigo, Fiedler, Poteat
Need at least one point guard. We also now need one, if not two, shooters/scorers. Probably ideally round out the class with another wing body, somebody who's long but can still manage in the paint. There are plenty of guys still available, but the worry is that the staff wasn't expecting Parrish and Murphy to transfer which would mean they haven't communicated with enough 2020 guys. That hurts in the short term, actually landing a commitment, and in the long term if we do get a guy, because the player-coach relationship isn't as strong as it is for a multiyear recruitment period. Also need to balance classes, because five freshmen obviously presents an issue down the road. Something like a grad transfer, a couple freshmen, and a transfer who'll have to RS.

As expected, Noah Hutchins commits to Rice. 2020 PG who plays for IMG. Really like his tape and think he can be immediately impactful. Good bounce and a legitimate point guard.
Hutchins also noted that Pera (and Assistant Coach Alexander) was the reason for committing in his comments to Mark Berman.

So if Pera gets fired, he's probably going to transfer. Great. His commitment video was pretty awesome though.

Out of the returning players, which ones have the ability to create (and make) their own shots? I thought that both Parrish and Murphy were able to do so

Parrish could create his own shot but he couldn’t make any of them, IMO.
If Mullins can return to his freshman year form, he’s our best guy off the dribble.

Pera is not going to get fired. One, Rice doesn't fire anybody for not winning. Two, he's made some progress, albeit too slowly to suit many. Three, right now is probably the worst time in the history of the planet to be firing a coach--with all the travel and meeting restrictions, how are you going to interview anyone? Fourth, never abandon plan A until you know what plan B is. I doubt very seriously that we have anybody in mind to bring in, and a long coaching search at this point would mean losing a year of recruiting and being ill-prepared for next year.
So no, Pera isn't going anywhere this year. But if the progress does not continue next year, I could see a change being made.

Peterson is very adept off the dribble. However, he only utilizes that skill once or twice a game, as he looks to pass first. Keep in mind, the majority of Parish's drives came on perfect passes from Peterson.

I wasn't advocating for firing or speculating that he would be fired. My point was that if the player is committing more to the coach than the school, like a lot of Rhoades' players, those players leave if the coach leaves (whether it is for dismissal or promotion).

Parrish was incredibly efficient and set Rice's all-time record for FG% in a season. He was basically unstoppable driving the ball. If you take out November, he shot 67% (!) on the year as a guard. He was incredibly underrated.
To the original question...Mullins and Moore can periodically create their own shots. Peterson likewise. But you're not going to count on them to consistently break down a defense. Even Murphy was sporadic in his ability to create his own shot. What sucks about Murphy transferring is we're going to miss out on him developing the last few aspects of his game. He's still really, really raw. There's no reason to think that by his senior year he won't be able to consistently beat his man off the dribble.

Most of Parrish’s shots were layups or close to the hoop. He wasn’t much of a threat from deep or mid-range.
Correct me if I’m wrong. You have access to better data than most on this forum.

Oh absolutely, he took one three all year I think. Never an outside threat. But he still created shots for himself in the paint, and was essentially unstoppable when he got a full head of steam. Even if he's not the focal point of an offense, I think guys like Parrish are important for an offense. He had the ability to bail us out of those possessions where we passed the ball aimlessly for 20+ seconds. Beyond Rob, I'm not sure anybody else had/has that ability (Peterson maybe).
