For the 2019 class, it looks like the only player with a Rice offer that we're still keeping tabs on is Anderson Kopp. We've been in to see him a couple of times, including once in October, but all his unofficial visits have been to schools up north. I would venture a guess that he wants to be close to his brother at Northwestern, which is why visits to Illinois State, Milwaukee, Loyola (CHI) make sense. Doesn't seem a likely get.

Unless we find a late steal somewhere I guess we’re going to snag a grad transfer? Doubt we get Deng. And if we aren’t keeping up with anyone except Kopp maybe it’s best to focus on 2020 recruiting now.

At first glance, it definitely looks like we've mostly moved onto 2020. Wouldn't hate to hold onto that final spot to try to get a junior/senior transfer after the season to keep our classes balanced.

Without trying to be overly cynical, how many Frosh/Soph transfers out do you think Pera will see in April?

So instead of saying 1 slot open for transfer, one has to try and game the magnitude of the "+" number that has to be written for the now edited "1+" slot.

Hopefully that '+' isnt large. But, Pera isnt building such a good track record about keeping the '+' down. I will grant you that the only Pera class one can judge this on is an 'abbreviated' recruiting cycle, and hopefully Pera can do much, much, much better about that 'stickiness' issue going forward.

I think that's a fair point and this class will probably be the biggest indicator of what Pera's retention rate is going to be like. And I do think it'll be an interesting case study.

Four of the five 2018s aren't local which means there's always a chance one or two get homesick. But on the flip side, there are reasons to think that much of the class will stay together. Four of the five guys were offered scholarships prior to August 2017, including two who were offered in summer of 2016. That leads me to think that most of the guys have known Pera and been able to develop relationships with him for over a year (not guaranteed, though, because Byers and Scott were the primary recruiters). The one odd man out there is Peterson but we also recruited him for a while and he's said multiple times he values education.

Does any of that mean anything if we win seven games and the season is trying? Probably not. But I'm going to be cautiously optimistic.

Looks like Linebaugh was in to see top-100 guard Dallion Johnson. 2020 out of Massachusetts who we've already offered and who also holds offers from some high academic schools and some high-majors (Rutgers, Penn State).

Looks like he's actually "from" Virginia, but goes to boarding school at Phillips Andover.

If he wants to go to an academically oriented school, he might be a tough pull from the Ivies given that half of his high school class is probably going to one.

I wonder if they did play. The site I looked at might have been wrong.

This was the link I saw which mentioned that game

https://watchstadium.com/news/not-so-sec...0-09-2018/

But the SFA fan site mentions nothing about the game a day later.

Did you guys see this? 6'10 is a big size!

https://riceowls.com/news/2018/11/14/men...edler.aspx

"Rice men's basketball coach Scott Pera has announced the signing of Max Fiedler (Indialantic, Fla.) to a national letter of intent for the 2019-20 school year, Pera announced Wednesday afternoon.

Fiedler, a 6-10 forward who played for Melbourne High School, led the Bulldogs to a 15-12 record, a district championship and a spot in the regional semifinals. He averaged 18 points, 12 rebounds and four assists while being named First Team All-Cape Coast Conference and Team Most Valuable Player.

"This morning I would like to announce the signing of Max Fiedler," said Pera. "Max is everything we are looking for as a Rice student-athlete. Max is one of the top students in his class as well as a skilled front court player. Max can score on the low block as well as step out and shoot the ball. He checks every box in what we are looking for in a student-athlete and we can't wait to get him on campus."

Might as well throw out what our preliminary 2020 target list looks like now that it seems we might be done with 2019 (no inside knowledge here at all...I can throw this into a separate thread if more appropriate):

Guys we've offered and who it looks like we're targeting
PG Emory Lanier (NR...Tennessee)
PG Evan Nelson (3*...Arizona)
PG Lamont Butler (3*...California)
PG Jahari Long (4*...Texas)
SG Hayden Hefner (3*...Texas)
SG Dallion Johnson (4*...Massachusetts)
SG Ricky Council IV (3*...North Carolina)

Other guys that we've offered
PG Justin Wright (NR...North Carolina)
PG Sion James (NR...Georgia)
SG Jackson Sivills (NR...Kentucky)
PF Dean Reiber (NR...North Carolina)

Guys who it looks like we're interested in but haven't offered
SG Colby Jones (3*...Alabama)
SF Josh Hall (NR...Virginia)
SF Osasere Ighodaro (NR...Arizona)
PF Burke Smith (NR...Virginia)
PF Chad Venning (NR...New York)

Guys who I hope we're still targeting
PG Isaiah LeBlanc (NR...Texas)

Texas guys who have been on campus or we've seen
PG Melvin Holloway (NR)
PG D'Avian Houston (NR)
SG Westley Sellers (NR)
SG JaJa Sanni (NR)
SF Jordan Henderson (3*)
SF Nate Martin (NR)
PF Stephen Faramade (NR)

Jahari Long is a player. I've seen him play and he can flat go get it.

Isaiah LeBlanc is an unranked player that easily should and could be. He's a hidden gem in my opinion. He is on a lot of teams radar but they are waiting for the little something that makes them jump. He too is a quality player.

Westley Sellers is the third prong to the trio at Morton Ranch. LJ Cryer can flat out score, he's been offered by many top schools. Eddie Lampkin is a HUGE kid that has high major offers, really wish we could get him. Sellers on any other team would be the main guy, but he too is a very quality player. One of two things will happen with him. He will either slide into some big basketball school offers because he plays with the other two or school will feel he does well BECAUSE of the other two and will shy away. He can play and definitely should be someone we are trying to nail down.

We need to go full court press on Hayden Hefner. He has Rice ties, his grandfather(or great grandfather can't remember which one) was a professor at Rice many moons ago. This kid can flat out play. Top notch talent.

I know for a fact that michigan has expressed interest in him. what that level of interest is I don't know, but they have made repeated contact. we drag our feet ssssoooo much....sigh....but this isn't surprising. I have again, on great authority, that some good young players have reached out to the coaching staff to come up to a practice for an unofficial visit and the coaching staff hasn't back to them. They made initial contact but when it came to setting a date its been weeks on end that they just haven't gotten back to them. These kids are stand out players and are truly interested in Rice and are set to be potential qualifiers for Rice. I was approached by them because they know I went to Rice and for them to get back to me with this story is quite disheartening.

Think we have it just doesn’t show us... per post above and verbal commits.

He has offers from Tulane (7/18/18). Rice. (6/3/18). A&M (10/16/17). OU (9/27/17). UH (6/25/17). Lamar (6/29/17).

247 shows the ones they think he’s interested in or the ones he’s told them, not sure how that works.

well at least we have offered him. he is a great kid and an even better athlete. definitely worth throwing all we had into trying our best to get him to stay close to home.

I agree it’s great to go after guys like that, but it’s going to be hard to convince a kid to come play at Rice in front of an empty gym when he has offers to play SEC and Big12 basketball. OU played in MSG last night against ND. UH lost to michigan in the NCAA tournament and just opened a new arena where they beat #18 Oregon.

I’ll let the staff allocate their resources appropriately. Who knows if he already told them he’s not interested. The only thing we can sell him on is 1. A more respected degree (OU and A&M are good enough alumni networks it’s probably not a huge difference). 2. Earlier playing time.

The fact that his grandfather taught at Rice probably has 0 impact on his decision.
