RE: 2018-2019 Men's Basketball Recruiting Thread
It's hard to believe that a 5'8" freshman could have a 48" vertical, but I had one(and still hold the record at my high school). Its hard to believe that a 6' guy could block a 6'10" guys shot but I did it. Its hard to believe that I'm the first grandson on either side of my family to graduate from college, but I was. It's hard to believe that i'm in a profession for 10yrs that most leave after 3-4, but i'm still in it(and love it). I made a living doing the hard to believe, so you finding it hard to believe means little to me.

You don't have to believe anything I put out there. I know talent and I don't put out a kids name unless I've seen them with my own two eyes IN PERSON. Fyi this kid won MVP of the texas top 100 fall camp. He was unranked going into the camp, he walked out with a name. Have you seen the kid play? If, not, who are you to say he's a walk on caliber kid? Kids don't ever get better huh, they just stay the same. The recruiting services miss kids and rank great players low all the time(5 kids drafted in this year's nba that weren't even ranked coming out of hs) . So you keep looking at recruiting services and I'll keep watching games and actually watching players to evaluate actual talent.

And the two football players are small school kids. Those are the kids that get overlooked because they're 2-3 hrs from the big city and are hard to get to. Many coaches find these kids a waste of time, but this is where the gems are found. Some kids don't have great stats but if you know talent you can see a kid has collegiate skills. Being that I played and have coached quite a few kids into d1 offers I can say those kids are worth looking into.

Two names.... Anthony Mowry Dan Dawson

Mowry... texas top 100, houston area top 100, several p5 offers, it was stated rice was lucky to get him and he was the gem of that recruiting class.

Dan dawson... on no one's radar, no offers other than rice, people had no idea why we signed him.

It's hard to believe that Mowry never started a game and hardly even played. It's hard to believe that dan was arguably the best defensive player Hatfield recruited. I've over the years put rice on guys BEFORE they blew up to give us a leg up. These kids will get d1 offers. Question is will we be in the running or will this be another how did we miss that kid he's perfect for us situation?

I told rice about josh nebo, they didn't want to listen. He's from the same high school my son now attends. He played alongside d'aaron fox. They felt he was good because of fox. I tried telling him he's smart and he's about to mature. He went to a small school and after one year tamu saw him and he transferred. He's now in many circles being talked about as a draft pick this year, AND HE'S SITTING OUT. Im not fail proof but I know talent and again they are worth loooking into to see if they fit.

One of Bill Yeoman's UH teams went to the Cotton Bowl with more starters from AAA and smaller schools than the rest of the SWC combined. I think small schools are one place where Rice could find lots of diamonds in the rough.

And I trust Nightowl's judgement over a lot of recruiting services.

The football kids you posted aren’t even on any recruiting sites that I could find.

The recruiting sites are businesses, and their primary purpose is to make fans feel good about whoever their team is already recruiting. They emphasize the biggest fanbases, for obvious reasons, but to the extent that they cover Rice, they are still selling hope. (The old rice.rivals.com was not at all subtle about that.) It does not make business sense for them to go around and find every kid that should be recruited but isn’t.

I don’t know nightowl personally, but as an excellent player who then went into coaching, he has more credibility on this stuff than just about anybody.

Which doesn’t necessarily mean that Rice is going to recruit everybody he mentions.

hatfield employed this method. a lot of his recruits came from small schools(or country areas) but we had big talent(dan, leroy, mike perry, travis ortega, kyle herm, clint hatfield, jake jackson, etc.). Those small school/country boys know nothing but just go out and play football. we enjoyed it and it was never a job, we loved it. we were all very eager to learn and a lot of us have very clean slates with regard to higher level coaching. its a very good formula, plus most of those small school kids are used to there not being a lot people in the stands so it doesn't bother them if we don't have large crowds.

Wilson commits to Georgetown, which I guess considering who they are and our recruiting last week, is not all too surprising. Still disappointing, though.

Chase Johnston and Quinn Richey also committed elsewhere, and looks like there's no longer interest in Trae Broadnax.

RE: 2018-2019 Men's Basketball Recruiting Thread
New offer out to 2020 PG Sion James out of Georgia. Good size for the position and already with an offer from Ole Miss and interest from Georgia + Georgia Tech.

Also an offer out to 2020 SF Cameron Sheffield out of Georgia. Primarily mid-major offers with the big Georgia schools sniffing around.

Unsurprisingly, most of our early offers are pretty talented recruits. High 3-stars and 4-stars who we have to offer early if we're going to have any chance. So far only two confirmed offers for Texas kids out of around 13 total: 4* PG Jahari Long and 3* SG Hayden Hefner. Long plays about 10 minutes away at Episcopal and is widely considered to be one of the top PGs in the state. He already has offers from Minnesota, TCU, and VCU, but I'd assume the staff is prioritizing him if they think they have any shot.

long is the real deal...hefner really can play as well. he and his brother are in the same aau organization as my boys. imma give you another inside line. his younger brother chase is a really good player as well. very similar to his brother. tall good range, great hops, his biggest problem is he has asthma. his asthma prevented him from playing in a few games but i think he has that under control now. he is a hidden gem.

Nate martin 2020 from cy creek is on an unofficial to rice today. He's getting some looks from other d1 mid major programs as well. Personally haven't seen him play but the word is he's a long kid with great athletic ability.

Yeah there's a list on page 3 of a bunch of the local kids who we've either been to see or who are visiting unofficially.

Jalen white visited rice recently. He posted a very generic report on his visit. Problem is he went to shsu a couple of days later. He seemed way more impressed with his visit there. He's a really good player hopefully we're can get him.

Why was he more impressed by Sam? Any idea?

I'll let you decide. This was he comments "Great visit to Sam Houston State. @CoachJHoot, @Chris_Mudge, & Coach Campbell are a 1st class staff. Each player came over to introduced themselves & welcomed me & my family to the Bearkats home. The attention to detail was off the charts in practice, can't wait to see them play"

This was the rice comments "Had fun watching Rice practice with @JWs2020Vision. Thanks @CoachKreider @RiceCoachPera for having us."

He's the #7 ranked kid in his class in the houston area. I've seen him play. Kid is nice.

Slight correction but White never actually tweeted about his visit to Rice (don't know if that's better or worse). He retweeted a tweet from 2020 Nate Lacewell who was also visiting.

But this is one area that Rhoades excelled at comparatively to Pera. If you were around Rhoades for like 5 minutes, you either wanted to run through a wall for him or play on his team. Pera is much more businesslike and serious. Drastically different atmospheres which can probably be disadvantageous sometimes when recruiting.

Any indication if we have had closed scrimmages against other schools? While in the past there has been a “Fight Club” mentality about the scrimmages and the results of them, this year schools have mentioned the results and some like Creighton have published stats (in Creighton’s Cashaw played 10 minutes and went 3-4 from the line).

Should be a much better barometer than Nicholls and TAMU-CC the last three years. SFA should be competing for an NCAA bid again.
