RE: 2018-2019 Men's Basketball Recruiting Thread
2019 6-4 G Zion Richardson took an unofficial. From Frisco, kind of a physical scorer who can shoot. Offers from La Tech, BU among others.
Also taking unofficials soon (all three from the same AAU team it seems):
2020 6-6 F Jordan Henderson (Texas): 247 has his as the 135th ranked player in his class (obviously subject to change)
2020 G Melvin Holloway (Texas): Undersized combo guard
2020 G Westley Sellers (Texas)
Other recruiting notes:
- 3* 2019 PG target Tyler Bertram is cutting his list to 7 next week. We offered him in May.
- I'd expect 2020 PG Emory Lanier to be a priority 2020 kid. Rob Lanier's kid who plays in Tennessee. Already been on campus

I’ll have to go watch him this winter if he commits to Rice.
Unfortunately, I’ll have to get a raise before I can be a bagman that moves the needle !!!

Stumbled upon this, but we just offerd 2019 F Jonathan Lawrence who's scheduled to visit in September. He's 6-9 with definite offers from UCF, Army, Georgia Tech, Brown, Dartmouth, and MIT. Not an overly athletic, quick, or flashy player. But looks like he has good feet and has very, very impressive range for his size.

But can he qualify academically?

We make the final 7 for 2019 3* PG Tyler Bertram. Out of Vermont Academy, the schools rounding out the 7 are: Loyola (IL), Saint Joe's, Brown, Hofstra, Charlotte, GW. He had interest from the likes of Michigan, Ohio State, and Xavier, but was never offered. Kid is a really good player and a lights out shooter. Would be a pretty big get.
A quote about Rice: "The program is in a great conference and the style of play fits me. The academics are great, so it offers a nice blend of elite education and strong basketball."

RE: 2018-2019 Men's Basketball Recruiting Thread
Out of the blue, 2019 F Ben Moffat just committed. He's from Wichita Falls, Texas. 33 ACT, 1400 SAT, so he's smart. I didn't know he even had a Rice offer, and there's very little info about him available. Not ranked by any site. Doesn't look like he has any offers. I'd assume he'll be a scholarship player considering we have 4 spots open. Probably doesn't eliminate us from the sweepstakes for either Malcolm Wilson, Majok Deng, or Tyler Bertram.
He was 5A defender of the year, but it's tough to judge kids against that level of competition. Comfortable shooting threes, had some nice post moves. But really hard to judge.

Yes, he did! Several others congratulated him on his commitment.

Maybe I'm missing it, but I see where says he's committing, not where he says he's receiving a scholarship offer. The omitted words (if indeed they are missing) usually connote something like PWO.

According to the Roost, he is a PWO. I'd assume he's on the higher end of the spectrum in terms of walk-ons.

Seems unusual for a PWO to commit this early. Isn't it more typical for PWOs to wait until the spring to see if they play well enough in their senior season to get a scholarship offer somewhere they are interested in?

Hard to imagine, but maybe he really wants to come to Rice.

Easy to imagine, but he could still hope a strong senior year lead to a scholarship offer. By committing as a PWO, that removes some of his leverage to try and get a scholarship offer. Unless he doesn't need the scholarship to attend Rice due to family circumstances or other available scholarships.

Article on Moffat. Sounds like he has a good plan and knows what he wants. He should have a very realistic chance to be placed on athletic scholarship within a year or two if (a) that's what he wants and (b) he shows he's deserving of an athletic scholarship.

Good article and could turn out to be the type of walk on we really want.

Wow..academic scholarship and possibly good enough basketball skills to contribute at the D1 level. That is exactly the kind of walk on this team needs!

That's the kind of walk-on that any team needs. Just glad we got him.

2019 C Malcolm Wilson begins his official today. Probably as good a weekend as any to have a priority recruit visiting. Won't match what he'll see on his visit to Clemson, but hopefully there's a buzz around campus.
