The proposed location would be a traffic nightmare if they ever needed to expand to 40,000. USA is not conveniently located for heavy traffic and the intramural fields are at the very back of the campus. Of course the same could be said about a lot of colleges.

If USA actually winds up building a 20,000 seat stadium, it is likely it will have it all to themselves. Because of its special nature, the Senior Bowl may not care about attendance, but the bowl game sponsors are likely to stay where they are. The BJCC stadium at 45,000 is probably at the bottom edge of acceptability for the B'ham Bowl.

USA will do good with 25k. Heck 45k is gonna be too big for us.

Most people in SEC territory have an unrealistic idea of how big the average crowd is for college games. A majority of schools aren't selling 75k-90k seats each week. Most schools outside of the privileged 5 average 25k to 30k. You can use wikipedia and the ESPN game pages to figure it out.

I would think you might not want to cap your attendance at 25,000.

It is difficult to make blanket statements about all P5 teams, but our own in Alabama usually play 7 home games and about half of these are guaranteed win cupcake opponents. The school's AD is not worried about actual attendance for these games (like Mercer Bears) because the season ticket sales included those games so the money has been in the bank since March or April.

Attendance for those games is mainly a concern for local merchants who put big money behind getting all home games moved to their town. Those merchants are happiest when the thousands of RVs and 4 day minimum hotel room reservation holders are rolling into town. These are the people the university hopes to make happy by designating one of those cupcake games as Homecoming - to spur actual attendance.

The BJCC has been in contact with ESPN about the Birmingham Bowl's requirements during this whole process. It's not going to be a problem. Do you think they're just doing this all by the seat of their pants?

Just because a new venture doesn't include stadium seat certificates doesn't mean it is all bad.

Why would anyone want to replicate the terrible mistake made 3 times over by B'ham's City Commissioners for financing Legion Field seating? Since universities (Bama since the mid1980s) and pro franchises have discovered the profitable wonders of charging large premiums for the purchasing of the best seats, this practice has condemned Legion Field to the minor leagues of sports venues. I doubt that any other stadium in America has such restrictions on selling advance season tickets for 1/5 of the best prime location seats at their venue.

When the original committee was considering the feasibility of the on-campus stadium, ESPN Regional (runs the bowl) required a minimum of 40,000 seats to commit the bowl to the proposed facility.

25k seats is what the feasibility study said they could afford. The city and county are considering paying for part of USA's stadium project, which helps. But they are still trying to figure out how the school will pay its share. They are currently in a private fundraising phase. Obviously, they will get it done one way or another with their own BOT's support.

I'll take UAB's deal over USA's simply because UAB will have more of its own money to spend on other projects, salaries, promotions, etc AND have a much nicer facility with more amenities that we don't have to staff or maintain.

Boy the Stockholm Syndrome is strong here. I'll knock the doors down trying to get into the BJCC facility for the first time but you are out of your f'n mind if you want anything other than UAB's own facility on campus.

RE: South Alabama on-campus football stadium moving closer to reality
So USA's BOT unanimously supports the stadium and has given the ok for the president to seek bids for construction, the pics of the stadium have been released, but funding has still not been secured. They plan for it to be done by the 2020 season, but are counting on city and county financial support that has not been secured... basically, egg will be on the elected officials faces if the funding isn't in secured... wonder if there will be a heated, 8-hr debate in the Mobile city council over funding USA's stadium?
