RE: OT: Want some outsider opinions on minor controversy among GS fans
AState fans get pissed when a Hog coach does an event in Jonesboro. Period. The host venue goes on the fecal matter list for some fans who won't go there after that.

On campus? They'd want the responsible person fired.

If it were a charity event on campus, the only way I could see it be done without epic outrage is Pig coach speaks followed by an AState coach.

It's held us back for so long. It recently has been getting better, but now that we've hit a low point while UGA has simultaneously hit a high point, those old wounds are reopening. That's what's got GS fans in an uproar.

I personally don't care that the B&G Club invited Smart to speak for a fundraiser, but it's definitely a kick in the nads to host him on our own campus while he talks UGA football to the very people that could care less about their actual Alma Mater.

Our entire existence has been this. We have had football 10 years, during that time Alabama has won the championship 5 times, played for it once and lost in the semifinals once, Auburn also won 1 and played for another..... It was so bad in this state UAb just gave up for 3 years.

In all fairness, NC P5s aren't the same as any other SB team state's P5s.

The equivalent for App would be in Roy Williams or Coach K were to speak in Boone or on Campus. You're right...there is no football equivalent for NC/App.

I'm trying to imagine Smart speaking at the GSU Stadium....thousands of UGA fans will show up...since UGA isn't our rival in football, I'd welcome the free publicity. Try to impress Smart and Dawgs fans with our facilities.....and make sure they leave with positive experiences about GSU to let them spread the good words for us.

Plus, Georgia Southern is getting paid to host the event I assume? so collect free money, generate goodwill by attaching your name to a charity, and show off your school to UGA fans. I don't see a problem.
GSU fans have gone ballistic for less

What if those thousands of UGA fans also happen to be students and alumni of Georgia State who don't attend State's games because they think it's not "real football?" Our problem is we have alums who put being a fan of UGA first. The people coming to hear Smart speak aren't driving here from Athens to see our campus and tell people how nice it is, these will mostly be people that went to school on our campus.

Like I said, it's for a good cause and I'm happy they will raise a lot of money, but it feels dirty at the same time.
Good cause but yeah do it elsewhere. I promise you they would not let Ron Hunter on their campus for "charity".

If TXST aligns itself in anyway with UT -- which is damn near impossible not to at some point being that it's 25 miles away, by far the largest and most powerful athletic program in the nation, and one of the original public ivy institutions -- we get called out by Aggies as being wanna-be longhorns. All Aggies think that all Bobcats are wanna-be Longhorns that didn't have the grades to get into UT.

If TXST aligns itself in anyway with A&M -- which is damn near impossible not to at some point being that it's 120 miles away, one of the largest athletic programs in the nation, and one of the largest schools in the nation -- we get called out by Longhorns as being wanna-be Aggies. All Longhorns think that all Bobcats are wanna-be Aggies that didn't have the grades to get into A&M.

Either way, we lose.

Therefore, I would refuse to associate with them in situations like this as much as possible.

UGA students and alums say the same thing in regards to GS. To them, we're just a party school for people who couldn't get in to UGA. In reality, a large part of our student population didn't even apply to UGA. I know most of the people in the engineering college including myself even chose GS over UGA for engineering and computer science because it was the better program.

The most annoying thing is when the trailer park UGA fans who never even went to college say those things about GS.

Biggest pet peeve of my entire life. Some jackwagon who can't hardly spell Georgia though the G is on every t shirt, hat, and vehicle they own, whose job depends on a healthy, thriving Statesboro economy which GS in large part helps provide, says "we" when referring to UGA and the Dwags, and thinks GS is "cute" for thinking they are big-time.
