Wow. Shocking and really sad.

The bickering was always in good fun and came from the same place: a passion for all things WMU.

He legitimately paved the way for a lot of us passionate diehards.

Going to miss him here and in other forums, big time. Rest in peace Dan.

I am Dan's son, a fellow WMU graduate. My dad loved WMU and was proud to be a graduate with a masters from Western Michigan.

I also know my father loved these boards and the community of all of his fellow Broncos. Even if it may have not felt that way. He was passionate about all he believed in, family, education, and community.

I know he loved you all as well. You brought him years of entertainment, debate, argument, and friendship.

I am devastated; honestly. I chatted with Dan by PM many times. Off the forum he was very quick to offer kind words and compliments. He was a tremendous and proud alum of WMU, but he was most proud of his family. He could relate to others who were as well, and often sent me a note about my kids. Dan was very smart, and was incredibly funny; sometimes in a hard core way. I still laugh just thinking about those picture comparison posts he would do of CMU players and some cartoon, or animal, or transvestite.

I now regret not having taken the time to meet up with him in person. We mentioned several times that we should get together for a beer, but never did. I'll miss Dan a lot.

I'm very saddened to hear this news. Like a punch to the gut. I knew Dan only the way most here did, from his postings. I was to meet him some years back when I got back to Kalamazoo for a game but something came up and he had to cancel.

It was apparent that he had a deep abiding love for WMU. Almost as much as for his family. My prayers go out to them and his close friends.

Bronco nation has lost a true diehard. We'll truly miss him.

Wow. How very sad. One day you’re posting, and then you’re not; puts things into perspective. He added passion and laughs, and it will be a gaping hole that sticks with you, I imagine especially for everyone who has gotten to know him over the years. But it’s a great tribute that even his frequent sparring partners will have such good memories of a genuine man. Rest in eternal peace!

And in true Chimp/Slappy form — it almost feels blissfully appropriate — the CMU site moderator locked the thread Hoople started to inform them of Dan’s passing... for what appears to be no reason.

Maybe can’t think of a better tribute to him on that board. Dip will forever be in their heads. 04-cheers 01-ncaabbs

RE: RIP Dan
My condolences to Dan’s family and to the members of this board who have lost a friend. He made our rivalry that much better, through his unwavering support of WMU and his willingness to engage his rival, win or lose. Although we rarely agreed with each other on these boards, I always suspected that I would enjoy talking sports with Dan over a cold beer.

Will chipdip rest in peace, or continue to stir the pot? GREAT Bronco publicly. Great encourager and supporter privately.

Anyone want to set up a fund to send flowers or something on behalf of this board?

I'd definitely go in on some flowers if somebody wants to set something up. This is a real bummer. Guy definitely made the WMU online community more interesting.

RE: RIP Dan
So Sorry to hear the news of Dan's passing. My experiences go back to the mlive boards. No one could zing the Chimps like him. I always admired his keen sense of humor. He was at his best analyzing Bronco football and basketball. He always took a.positive approach but was not afraid to tell the truth when things were not at their best.I will miss the.WMU Sports Rag it helped fill a void in Bronco sports coverage. May Dan's family find peace and comfort while dealing with their loss.
