Yes the city of Huntington should have went for the proposal of the Marshall president and AD in 1976 that the city and Marshall each go half on an 11,000 seat venue where the Huntington Civic Center later renamed The Big Sandy Arena sits today. The city leaders completely shut that idea down and the city ended up with sub par 7,500 seat civic center and Marshall ended up with a 10,040 seat Henderson Center. Seating was lowered to 9,050 in the early 90s.

But these are the same leaders that rejected the "Huntington Mall" in 1974. Instead it goes to Barboursville and the rest is history.

clt needs to learn more about this superstore arena.

The problem of the Henderson Center and the Huntington Civic Center was due to the location. The MU president would only accept that the arena be built east of 15th Street or on the western edge of the MU campus. The city officials wanted an arena built downtown. Thus Huntington ended up with two arenas. The MU president had other conflicts with local and state elected officials and he was forced to resign a few years later.

Instead of compromising and coming together like adults should and building a nice facility. In the end the city got a building not big enough to usually draw bigger acts or even conventions. And Marshall got the albatross of the Henderson Center when the state took 1/4 the allocated money away from it.

Also like I said the same leaders completely rejected the "Huntington Mall" 2 years earlier, that alone is why I would put more responsibility of the proposal falling apart. But yeah I understand neither side would budge on what they wanted or where they wanted it.

And the wonderful powers that be in Huntington refused to bring the interstate through the city. The mall could have been built in the "StuperBlock. Life is a tuxedo and Huntington is a pair of brown shoes.

The SuperBlock is exactly where the mall would have went. That mall alone would have brought millions of dollars to the city as it is still doing in Barboursville. Bring the interstate though Huntington would have transformed the city somewhat (Think Charleston and Morgantown) but the bigger loss in my opinion has always been the mall.

The one thing that really holds the city of Huntington back right now is about 1/4 of the city is unusable. And the cost to clean it up is beyond what the city or almost any private business or citizen could afford.

Yeah, it's pretty sad when Huntington could have had all of the B&O tax that Barboursville now get (and has gotten for years). Barboursville goes to the bank to make a deposit and the bank says, "Oh no, I'm sorry, you have too much money here for us. You'll have to bank elsewhere for the rest."
