RE: Eastern Michigan growing outrage to sports cuts
Dear okgc,
There is not a growing outrage. It is the same one hundred or so mostly athletes of the sports that have been cut. I do feel sorry for them, but it is something that had to be done in order to meet the demands of the university budget. These Free Press writers are either anti-Eastern, or maybe feel this is a crusade that must be won for the down trodden.

I tend to agree with Barna.
Unfortunately these athletes (and alums) are victims of previous administrations' failures and lack of fiscal responsibility.

EMU had 4 or 5 more sports than EVERY OTHER MAC school. Simply right-sizing. Very tiny minority of whiners, and media hacks, that love to make mountains out of mole hills, and misrepresent any and all facts to fit their little agendas.
Sad

Very few colleges have the resources to fund that many sports. WMU has paired some down over the years too. You never know, we could lose a sport or two within the next decade.

EMU faces the impossible. Ten mins from UM and an athletic dept that is broke.

RE: Eastern Michigan growing outrage to sports cuts
Dear BuickBronco,
Our athletic department isn't broke. We just arrived at a point in time, because of our State legislature, where cuts had to be made. Personally, I always thought we were trying to support too many venues. Our athletic director has done a wonderful job of doing what was necessary, in order to keep the other programs in place, and adjust the athletic budget.
Remember, Western also uses money from their general fund for athletics. Our legislature's continued underfunding of the MAC schools makes students drop out, or cut back on the number of credit hours taken in a given semester. This translates to less money for schools to operate.

The MAC should offer to wave EMU's fee to leave the conference if they eventually decide to cut or drop-down in football. It would be a win-win situation.

Dear GRBRONCO,
Eastern is not dropping out of the MAC. Eastern is not dropping football, or dropping down a division.
