Outgained them by 150 yards and had 4 turnovers....2 picks in the end zone. Our team was a lot better thn them.

I think we're better at defense for sure. Our offense is likely about the same overall, but certainly not as good at QB unless SW has improved a lot.

RE: ODU Football Opponent Preview: Liberty
Our defense is significantly better and our offense is significantly worse. I would think this year's team would lose to the 2013 team. Heinicke would throw all over our secondary similar to what Stockstill did in the last game of the year in 2017. They lit us up.
If we see growth in the QB position this season, I would change my mind. But rewatching film on the games last season, our QBs really struggled to find the open receiver on the field. Our receivers got a bad rap IMO. They were open in the games I watched.

The only chance the 2013 team would remotely be in the game vs. the 2018 version is because we had an all world QB in Heinicke. The team outside of Heinicke is much worse.....the only other spot where they had talent comparable to what we have now is WR.
Remember the 2013 version had zero defense. Our current offense would run all over them. Heincike would move the ball on offense, but eventually our defensive line and secondary would take over. Outside of an all world effort from Heinicke, it woulnd't be close.

Is this really up for debate? Weren't in in FBS transition that year? Our opponents weren't any conference (neither CAA nor CUSA) and we finished 8-4. We lost to all 4 FBS teams, and beat all 8 FCS teams unless you count Idaho as FBS.
The only argument you could make is we had the best quarterback in our short history. I know QB is important, but it certainly wasn't a better team.
It was interesting reading some of those posts on their boards. I don't think they realize what's about to hit them. Bias is expected though.

Thier talking about our 2013 season!?! lol... If we could take our current defense and insert them into 2013 we probably beat ECU and Pitt and take the sting out of the UNC loss.
I can't blame or joke any LU fan thinking they're going to beat us in 39 days. I remember the smack talk of the excitement and emotions of our first FBS game vs. East Carolina. This is their first FBS team at home their excitement and emotions are off the charts and I feel if we have poor quarterback play they'll beat us. LU has everything to gain from this game so I expect their best effort.

ODU managed only 31 points against 4-7 FCS Albany and didn't break 40 points last season in a single game. Heinicke would have dropped 40+ points on our current defense.
I think everyone forgets that we beat a 1-11 Charlotte team 6-0 last season. We weren't very good.

Yes I agree we were not great last year but look at what happened to the offense
- 17 yr old QB
- Duhart gone after 2nd game
- Lawry hurt all year
- Cox missed last part of the season
- OL struggles and injuries
- WRs dropped a ton of passes
It was not going to be pretty given the circumstances.

Has anyone looked at who Liberty beat last year? More importantly, has anyone looked at who they lost to? Weird to see fans of a team who lost to Monmouth and St Francis be so cocky.

FWIW, that probably provides more support for the FBS>FCS level of competition. We still didn't have our QB situated, lost Lawry early on, struggled mightily on offense and still scored as many points as anyone did against Albany last year. (tied with Richmond in regulation and Rhode Island)

They are going to come out fired up like we did vs. ECU. If we don't match their intensity, it's not going to be an easy game. If we come out and playing anything close to our potential, it will be over before the 4th quarter starts.

Yeah, agreed. If we're flat, they have a chance to grab their first home FBS win. But that doesn't explain their fan confidence at all.

True. I'm not sure how I could be confident after their record last year, but did they have a Last Chance U influx of talent or something...?

Their 2018 class ranked 135 in 2018 on 247 (up from 171 the year prior). So it doesn't look like it.

Good points. Duhart and Cox healthy will help. I am not sold on Williams being better because he's older. I don't think we have anyone with Ray Lawry's playmaking in the backfield, although we still have talent.
Hopefully the OL will be better. They have underperformed, IMO, the last two seasons. My bold prediction is that Travis Fulgham rebounds from a rough season and breaks out this year.

"I am not sold on Williams being better because he's older."
Simplistic approach to put it mildly. Older (as in more mature) would be one point of several. How about he'd have another year to learn the offense, to work with a guy like Duhart who could make a difference, to work with QB coach Whitcomb. I have no idea what will happen with him but to dismiss the idea of improvement without considering someth8hg other than age? Not going to buy that argument.
