How far we’ve come... it’s taken 9 years for us to get to point where we’ve got a 45 percent chance to beat liberty on the road

Good thing I don't bet my life on the percentages that SBNation places on stuff.

I mean it’s probably a good thing that you don’t bet your life on anything, not exactly sure what you’re getting at

Liberty had a very mediocre season last year against some not very impressive competition. Same Head coach who many on the Liberty board are down on. I'm not seeing them as a 55 chance winner. Hope I'm right.

I think the game has the potential to be close, but I don’t see us losing this game. We’re in for a long season if we don’t win this game. Schedule is too tough to drop this one.

I'm not sure how you are calling this schedule a tough one. Four of our opponents are in the bottom eleven teams of the Orlando Sentinel FBS countdown. Add VMI and Liberty to those four and we have almost instant bowl eligibility. Yes, we play VA Tech, Marshall and FAU -- and they are tough, but this is not a tough schedule. Just the opposite.

While you are correct that we play a lot of low ranked teams (and that's ignoring how low we will be ranked), the toughest part of our schedule is in successive weeks (VT, @ECU, Marshall, @WKU, MT, UNT). You can call the rest of the schedule easy, but I think you'd be hard pressed to not call that a tough stretch.

RE: ODU Football Opponent Preview: Liberty
According to SB Nation, we should be favored in 5 games (including ECU on the road, which I'll believe when I see it). The schedule starts out winnable enough with LU, FIU, ECU, VT, Charlotte but after that we won't be favored for a long time. The middle of the schedule is brutal. We need to start out 4-1 to have a good season. A 3-2 start could see us limp into a bowl. If we start out 2-3 or worse it will be a long season.

RE: ODU Football Opponent Preview: Liberty
First FBS home game for LU. How much was the hype and excitement when ODU had their first FBS home game and how does it seem to compare to LU's? It would seem that one time experience would be an advantage to the home team unlike any other time. If the ODU-LU game was later in the season, I'm guessing that ODU would be a pre-season favorite. But with it being the initial game one could see giving any home team a 10% bump chance advantage.

I checked Wiki and I believe Eastern Michigan was ODU's first FBS home game FBS win. Comparing EM playing at ODU it seems that game's hype would pale to ODU opening for LU.

I think you could look at the ODU/ECU game.

There is no doubt you guys are going to be ready to play the game of your lives. If we don’t knock the wind out of you by halftime, we’re going to be in for a dog fight. It will be a good test for our coach to see how he prepares our relatively seasoned team.

This game definitely needs to turn into a series. Would be an enjoyable rivalry for both sides.

This is my take on the games:

LU - tough game/should win (1-0)
FIU - tough game/should win bc home (2-0)
UNCC - win (3-0)
VT- loss (3-1)
ECU - loss bc on road (3-2)
FAU - loss bc on road and tough game (3-3)
Marshall - loss (3-4)
WKU - loss (3-5)
Middle - loss (3-6)
NTX - win (4-6)
VMI - win (5-6)
Rice - win (6-6)

We can’t afford to lose the LU game.

RE: ODU Football Opponent Preview: Liberty
Has anyone heard rumors of who will carry the game on TV? Harry seems to have an ear for the unannounced. I'm guessing LU is actively working behind the scenes trying to put together stations in the central and coastal areas for an informal broadcast network.

I checked area FBS teams playing on Sept. 1
UVA vs. Richmond at C'ville
VaTech off, plays Sept 3
NCState vs. JMU at Raleigh
UNC vs. California at Berkeley, CA
Duke vs. Army at Durham

The UVA game will command the largest interest as Richmond will give them all they can handle. VaTech is off, JMU will generate interest in Harrisonburg and little where else. So the LU/ODU game can be expected to generate the 2nd most interest in the state. One can bet Jr. Falwell, if he does not shoot himself in the foot with some idiotic announcement(s) of support for Prez Donnie, will spend the bucks to hype the game. I'm betting LU wants to use this as a springboard and foundation game to build, not so much from the win perspective (of course they want to win), but from a promotion and marketing perspective. The wins eventually will come, with or without an ODU victory.

I would imagine Liberty will look at this game as a statement that they've "arrived" and if they win they will proclaim themselves the third best team in Virginia. This will be a battle for recruiting perception and reputation in the state as much as a battle on the field. This game will have ramifications that last much longer than the game itself.

Wns vs UNCC, VMI, and Rice should be absolutes.

We could sneak a win at ECU
We might even sneak a win at Marshall (only because of last years turmoil. The Herd clearly has better personnel top to bottom)
We could sneak a win vs Empty Sue

The FUs are going to be tougher than some here think.
I am not sure NTX is going to be a win either.

The above w/l record seems reasonable.
I think our best shot at another win is ECU, but I think we could lose to NTX.

In any event, IMHO, we MUST win at LU or we are in for a long season.

04-cheers

Agreed - and I’m hoping we provide a good and proper beat down/“welcome” to FBS. Nothing would be more discouraging for them to get dominanted in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Similar to the way it felt when we played the heels last year.

There was no turmoil in Huntington last year. Marshall went 8-5 last year with a bowl win over Colorado State. Our down year was 2016, 2 years ago and can be attributed to 3 players who brought the whole team down. Those 3 where Michael Clark WR, Deontay McManus WR and Kendall Gant Safety. None of which were on campus to start the 2017 season.

Chase Litton may be gone but our eventual game day starter most likely isn't even on campus yet in transfer Alex Thomson, Thomson is 6'5 230 pounds with a rifle for an arm. Then there is RS Freshman Isaiah Green 6'2 214 pounds who has looked good this spring.

Then you have at WR Tyre Brady, Willie Johnson, Marcel Williams, Nick Matthews with new comers Jaquan Webb who just won the Mississippi state track titles in the 6A 100m, 110m, 200m and 4x200 relays (The kid is fast), Corey Gammage, Tarlik Keaton, Artie Henry III, Jordan Wayne-Prather, Caleb McMillian and Tyquavious Terrell. With a backfield of Tyler King, Keion Davis, Anthony Anderson and Branden Knox.

You will probably see the best OL in the G5 and I would venture to say one of the best in the entire country. Last year they gave up a total of 8 sacks the whole year and out of those 8, 5 happened in the 1st 4 games.

To beat Marshall this year ODU is going to have to beat their speed and I don't think you will have the defense to do that, not this year anyway.
