RE: The Rice baseball team plays Charlotte tonight, and then maybe 2 more times
Nice win today, despite the seemingly obligatory two baserunning errors and dormant hitting against a bunch of sub-par pitchers all with ERAs over 5.00. IMO, Wayne left Canterino in one batter too long. My guess is he was already well over 110 pitches.
Game Ball #1: John Canterino: (W, 4-4, 7.1 IP, 4 hits, 2 runs, 2 BBs, 1 HBP, 4Ks)-- despite not having his best stuff, he had a two-hitter through 7 innings, and half the hits he gave up were cheapies (one an infield chopper and the other a bloop falling in front of Dunlap).
Game Ball #2: Kendall Jefferies (Save #1, 1.2 IP, 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 BBs, 3 Ks)-- absolutely lights out to close out the game. As dominant as Gayle was Friday night.
Game Ball #3: Ford Proctor (2-4, HR#7, 1 run, 1 RBI)-- his solo shot in the 6th broke a scoreless game and dueling 2-hitters, and temporarily woke up the listless offense (with the next 5 batters getting on base, adding two more runs).
To state the obvious, we desperately needed this one. As others have pointed out, we pretty much need to win each of our remaining 4 CUSA series, starting with this one, to ensure inclusion in the conference tournament. If Moss can be on his game, we should win tomorrow as Charlotte's pitching beyond their Friday night starter is pathetic. (Yes, I know we couldn't hit today's starter despite his 6.10 ERA coming in.) Let's come out energized and motivated tomorrow. Go Owls!
