Jaguars owner Shahid Khan looks to buy Wembley Stadium
Wow! It looks like the speculation of a permanent NFL team in London may be ever closer to reality. 04-jawdrop

http://www.newsobserver.com/news/busines...69454.html

Quote:A buyout of Wembley by Khan, who also owns London soccer club Fulham, could increase the prospect of having an NFL franchise in the British capital.

In a statement on the potential purchase of Wembley, the NFL says "we are very happy for Shad Khan and the Jacksonville Jaguars."

Quote:Khan’s long-term ambition is to move the Jaguars into Wembley on a permanent basis but that remains some way off. A more immediate likelihood is an increase in NFL matches at the venue, with a view to establishing a fanbase big enough to sustain a permanent franchise.

I think their original logo has some legal issues with Jaguar.

It did and they came to an arrangement and part of the deal was that Jaguar became the official car sponsor for the team.

I think the logistics are against a team in England on any kind of permanent basis. Divisional teams would be really hurt with travel and time zone issues.

The NFL has gamed it out and they think it can work. A London team would play 2 or 3 consecutive games at home and 2 or 3 in a row here in the USA, and they would have a training facility here where they could get off the plane from London and go straight to their facility and work there during their road trips. The article I read suggested it would be near Dulles Airport in Virginia, but it would be just as easy to place it near another airport where they can easily fly nonstop from London, such as Atlanta or one of the NY/NJ airports. If the NFL added a 2nd bye week to the schedule, they could give every team that plays a road game in London a bye week after their trip to the UK.

There must be silent approval for this from the NFL offices. It's very unlikely that Khan would plunk down 500 million pounds just so he can say he's the landlord for England's national soccer teams.

I have heard speculation the next step is for the Jaguars to start playing 2 home games a year in London. If this is the plan, the strategy might be for the Jaguars to gradually play more home games in London each year. The players will continue to spend training camp and road game weeks in Jacksonville. If the city of Jax doesn't like it, then they will find another American city to be their state side home.

I believe if the NFL does put a permanent team in London, it will be probably be time for the NFL to realign into east-west conferences

I don’t know if that’s really necessary, and it could be highly problematic:

“AFC”
Pacific - LA Rams, San Francisco, Arizona, Seattle
West - LA Chargers, Las Vegas, Denver, Kansas City
Central - Houston, Tennessee, Indianapolis, Cincinnati
North - Minnesota, Chicago, Detroit, Green Bay

“IFC”
Atlantic - London, NY Jets, New England, Miami
East - Philadelphia, Washington, Dallas, NY Giants
South - New Orleans, Atlanta, Tampa Bay, Carolina
North - Cleveland, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Buffalo

Dallas will want to stay with the bug Eastern market teams, even tbough they would logically be in a Western conference. New Orleans wants to stay with Atlanta. Atlanta wants to stay with Carolina. Cincinnati wants to stay with Cleveland.

You also have the issue that most of the TV contracts are currently done by conference, so whoever has the “AFC” contract would have not have as many attractive options for the early window.

Keep in mind London would be a no-go for any prime time games, and even the “Big Game” could be an issue should London make it that far.

IMHO I don't think a permanent team in London is a great idea. Here is what I propose instead:

Reduce the preseason to 3 games and increase the regular season to 17 games

Each team plays 8 home games and 8 away games and 1 international series game--that's 16 games to place around the world.

For the presason I'd do 1 home/1 away/1 neutral site US non-NFL market. These games could be played at college stadiums in markets that are pseudo 2nd homes for an NFL teams. E.g. Bengals/Browns in Columbus, Florida teams in Orlando, Carolina at Clemson or UNC, Seattle at Oregon...

East Conference

Atlantic division
NE, NYJ, Miami, NYG, Philly, Wash, Dal, London Jaguars

Middle division
Balt, Pitt, Cle, Cincy, Atl, Car, Tampa, Buf

West conference

Central division
Minn, GB, Chi, Det, Indy, Tenn, NO, Hou

Pacific division
Sea, SF, Ariz, LAR, LAC, LVR, Den, KC

Really geographically Dallas should be in the west conference and Central division. Tenn should be in the east conference, and Buf should be in the Atlantic, but. If Dallas really insists they want to be in the east, then they can stay in the east.

You are right about Dallas. It would make a lot more sense to put them in the West or the Central Divisions, but the Cowboys love the NFC East Division and refuse to leave.

Another scenario could be 2 teams move to London at once, let's say The Jaguars and Bills both move to London. Then you could try 2 different alignments. Put both London teams in same division or put them in different conferences.

I am guessing it would work better for all teams if they put the 2 London teams in the same division. Then visting teams would only have to take 1 trip to England and play both London teams in back to back weeks. Although teams like the Patriots or the Jets might prefer to just fly there in separate trips and fly home right away after each game.

Quote:Khan did leave the door open to revisit the opportunity to purchase Wembley Stadium in the future. Rumors have swirled for years that Khan is interested in moving the Jaguars to London, and the team playing there on an annual basis has been seen as part of those plans. They are scheduled to play the Eagles at Wembley Stadium on Oct. 28, and are also guaranteed to play there in both 2019 and 2020 as well.

There is about an hour difference in flight time from NY to London vs NY to LA

And Seattle to Miami is same distance as NY/London

Time Zone is 5 hours different. The West Coast Teams + Arizona have a three hour difference between home and East Coast.

Not as insurmountable as pictured. Of course when the West division teams played the AFC South, you'd have to work byes in there.

The biggest logistical problem is that, even if they don't mind playing and living in the UK, US football players won't sign to play on an NFL London team if they have to pay UK taxes instead of (or in addition to) US taxes on their salaries. There was a report recently that Khan, the Jags owner, has been looking into this and trying to figure out if an NFL owner could base his team in the US (say, in Florida or Virginia where they would train at team headquarters) and play their home games in London without subjecting the players to being taxed for being employed in the UK.

As for flight times and time zones, you could make it work if a London team played nearly all its road games in the eastern time zone and the London team's games vs. western teams were as rare as Seattle vs. Miami games are now. A London team would probably play all its road games in two or at most three blocks, training and living at its east coast home base when on their road trips.

Khan wants to do it, and probably will do it eventually if he gets the tax issue solved and gets league approval.

They need to do salary cap adjustments for local (and if they go international) tax rates.

A team like Miami in effect has 3-4% more salary cap room than in a higher tax state/country. Do some type of location adjustment.

RE: Jaguars owner Shahid Khan looks to buy Wembley Stadium
Just a thought, but I think this would all work better if you created an entire division of English teams.

Instead of moving the Jaguars to London, create 4 expansion clubs. You could base 2 of them in London...one at Wembley and Tottenham's new stadium is designed for the NFL. Stick one of them in the Manchester/Liverpool region...there's talk of a new stadium for Everton so an NFL friendly design could be incorporated there. Maybe another one in the Midlands. Creating local rivalries, I think, would be better for the game over there anyway.

From a logistical perspective, you've guaranteed fewer trips to the US by ensuring more road games are within England rather than international.

The only difficult thing here is that you'd have more American teams flying to the UK in order to fill out the schedule for 4 teams instead of just 1. I'm not sure that's a bad thing though. More teams moving through England could offer greater exposure for each franchise and no single team would be making the trip that often either way.

The scheduling structure of matching divisions during regular season play would have to stop, but if they expanded again then the rotation would have to be altered anyway.
