Dang. I expect Nevada to be better than we are next season, and Trey very well may see the NCAA now, but I don't look at the Nevada program overall as being any better than what I expect from ODU. If its not a lateral move (across the continent), it should be.

Nevada and ODU's programs can be considered peers, but strictly looking at next season, Nevada is well ahead because they're a top 25 contender (Lunardi has Nevada as a 3 seed in his most recent Bracketology; also worth noting that he has ODU as a 12 playing West Virginia in the first round). So for someone who has one season left and wants the most bang for his buck, Nevada is not only a good choice compared to ODU, but possibly compared to a lot of programs with much higher profiles and reputations. Nevada could come back to earth the year after but Porter won't care because he'll be gone.

Alright, I'll bite. I think they are a better school but they are still a mid major in a mid major conference. They will probably be no higher than a 7 seed in the tournament (that's on the committee, not me). Of course they are better, but it's still from one mid major to another.

I'm willing to bet a ton of money that they will be higher than a 7 seed.

Is there a way to save this comment? I won't bet a ton of money, but I will put internet bragging rights on the line that they will not be higher than a 7 next season.

Put me on the higher than a 7 train.

Hmm? You gotta explain this one. We have had quite a bit of good news this week.

You may interpret that as good news, but that is only because through the slow roll and successful erosion of expectations throughout a long period of time, Woody has managed to move the Overton Window to the point that the disaster has become interpreted as successful. If the same story had been released 5 years ago or 3 years ago, you and everyone else would have been livid. It is really quite an interesting case study. He got us to the point that we would have been happy with anything. Quite a long way from 30,000 chairback seated waterfront stadium with boatgating.

First, OP is perfectly capable of backing up their hyperbolic post.

Second, the change in stadium design is perfectly warranted based on the insane costs of the Powhatan site and our current funding restrictions.

And even if the stadium news isn't good in your book, that's just 1 week of news. We have had plenty of good news over the last 3 years. Record number of donations in each of the last 2 years. Baseball stadium renovations. Practice facility opening. We just won a CUSA championship last week. New volleyball program starting. We got a women's bball coach who appears to have the program headed in the right direction. That's just a few things that have been positive related to ODU. But go ahead and try to back him up on nothing good happening in the last 2 to 3 years.

I think 7 is a good over/under. I wouldn't bet either way. Problem is, the MWC is pretty far flung and they are likely to lose a couple of head scratchers on the road. With the lack of respect mid-majors get, a road loss to someone like New Mexico or Air Force literally be the difference between a 3 seed and a 7 seed. Lose 2 of them and they could suddenly fall all the way down toward bubble territory.

Well stated. They are roughly where we are in general as a basketball school and up until 2 years ago, we were much better. But, they are pretty loaded for next year and Porter is only going to be there next year.

What I'm curious to see is they play small ball, which works well with the Martin twins as bigs. How does that reshape their playing style when a guy like Porter really isn't athletic enough or a good enough shooter to play on the outside offensively or defensively?

I was only addressing last week's news. 9-3 football season was good news (followed by bad news with bowl game and the matchup). The NIT run was good news. The rest that you mention was good news for many, but out of my realm of interest, which is pretty much mens basketball and football results.

But a 7 seed that has a ton of buzz around the program, in one of the best mid major conferences is in a completely different stratosphere than us at this time.

I am guessing that you have no idea what they return and what they are bringing in. I'll break it down for you....

Caleb Martin 6'7 AVG: 19 ppg 5.4 rpg and was the POY in the MWC
Cody Martin 6'7 AVG: 14 ppg 6 rpg 5 apg and was the DPOY in the MWC
Jordan Caroline 6'7 AVG: 18 ppg 8.6 rpg
Lindsey Drew 6'4 AVG: 8 ppg 4 rpg 4 apg
Josh Hall 6'7 AVG: 7 ppg and 4 rpg

What they add...

Jalen Harris AVG: 15.3 ppg 4.5 rpg
Trey Porter 6'10: 13 ppg 6 rpg

Those returners come back from an elite 8 team and they add two of the best players from CUSA last year.

This is a different argument.

I agree that Nevada is not significantly better than ODU SHOULD EXPECT to be, but they are miles better than we actually are.

Not that it changes anything, but Drew may not play next year.

Pretty sure he won't start anyway.

Starting lineup will likely be:

PG Cody Martin
SG Jalen Harris
SF Caleb Martin
PF Jordan Caroline
C Trey Porter

That is one of the best starting 5's in the country.

They were ranked 27th by Kenpom last year.
7th Off
108 Def

Add a rim protector to that defense and it will go way up.

I also expect the offense to go up.

Agreed - and he got “handled” in our high profile games against Middle and WKU (3x). Better luck to him on the left coast!

Porter fulfilled his obligation at ODU so no hard feelings. But he def took a blow when he told Maryland he wanted to go and they wanted to wait. Or Georgetown that didnt want him.

...he had one break out year and certainly is not established. And he looked overmatched in our key games - and/or lost his composure. I’m sure the P5 scouts watched those games, too. Nevada is a good land for him, but I’m sure not what he hoped for. They are “new money” and have had quite a dance drought until recently. Perhaps he is on Nevada’s payroll. It’s become en vogue to pay players these days:)
