Arkansas State went through two very politically incorrect Indian logos and then switched to one that would be very hard to call offensive. It was dull as hell.

So there was a collision of several ideas.

I was using my site to point out that the then pending Redskins litigation was a serious concern and we should embrace an alternate logo that could be used in fun and interesting ways. Guy I was doing the site with at the time suggested a Red Wolf because wolves and Indian imagery together is often used.

At the same time a faculty member was lobbying the administration to ditch Indians and go to Red Wolf because the species used to be common in the area.

Then the head of the booster club was trying to get the booster club to approve use a wolf logo because they couldn't do anything interesting with the Indian logo.

Booster club ripped the guy a new one and put a stop to it, but the seed was planted with them as well.

So my response was to make my argument and removed all Indian imagery from my site and swapping in wolf images.

Several times a year opposing fans would drop in and inevitably someone would ask why wolves when you are Indians and there would be a post explaining that it is hard to do Indian imagery that doesn't offend someone and wolves were important in many native tribe cultures, the Red Wolf had been native to the area and was endangered so worth drawing attention to.

About 6-7 years later the NCAA edict comes down and casting about for a change, the consensus was quickly reached to go with the Red Wolf.
I liked Running Joe. Didn't know about the endangered Red Wolves in the state. Neat story.

Only remaining Red Wolf population in the Wild is in North Carolina. Unfortunately, scientists believe that population is no longer viable, and the species will eventually become fully extinct in the Wild.

Lots of issues with cross breeding with Coyotes.

Major predators east of the Mississippi are near extinct if not extinct.

Maybe some connection to Panthersville or maybe to North Georgia past. They were common the area through the 1930s although they may be making a comeback (Western mountain lions migrating east). Interestingly although there are only three Panthers in FBS, it is the same animal as the cougar, puma, catamount and even nittany lion.

Florida Panther was shot and killed by a deer hunter near LaGrange a few years ago. DNA was tested to determine he was a Florida Panther. Young males can range hundreds of miles.

Coastal's Chanticleer is inspired by Chaucer's Canterbury Tales while also being an offshoot of SC's gamecock since Coastal is a former branch campus.

I’m trying to remember the story but it wasn’t as bad as it sounds from my post. Like I said he was deer hunting and somehow encountered the panther. It might have been a him or me situation but I can’t recall details. He did immediately report it to DNR and was arrested but I think charges were dropped.

Last confirmed population east of the Mississippi. Although there have been sightings in the last 18 to 24 months in Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia. Western Cougars migrating east.

If I’m sitting in my deer stand and I see one, I have to admit shooting it will cross my mind. Not that I’m in danger at the moment but for when I eventually have to leave the deer stand. Especially if I have my son with me. Not saying I would but it would be a choice that I’m sure I would consider.

Reality is that they are just as afraid of humans as human are of them so there is a 99% that if not confronted they will just move along. They were hunted to extinction not because they terrorized humans but because they terrorized cattle.

I have no desire to kill one unless I’m forced. Grew up on a cattle farm and had to shoot coyotes from time to time to protect new born calves. Most of the time the herd will handle this but a young cow with her first born calf tend to hide their calves while they graze.

I think most people feel the same. From what I recall from the LaGrqnge incident the hunter was experienced and actually felt threatened.

"Georgia Southern, Georgia State, UALR sorry LR, Troy, USA, TXST go out automatically because they use such common names though done so earnestly. Just for the heck of it, I'll toss UTA in the pile because while not as common, Mavericks isn't that out there on the unique scale overall, it was a nice save from Rebels, just a shame that the NBA team took it on 8-9 years later, also a shame that whomever sold UTA it's current logo stayed up all night and then remembered they were supposed to turn something in first thing in the morning and basically modified Boise State's modification of the Denver Broncos logo."

Just a little quibble, but BSU (or more accurately BJC and BC) has had their school colors and nickname long before the Denver Broncos even existed. This includes several variations of horse and horse head logos. The Denver Broncos are the followers in this case. Frankly, my favorite SBC nickname was the Idaho Vandals. That one is truly unique and does not seem to be among the politically incorrect nicknames even though it denotes a group of people. Apparently, neither Germanic peoples or Romans are offended. Off topic a bit but, my favorite college nickname belongs to the Spokane Community College Sasquatch.

I think ULM's Warhawk is a great story and I'm sure there are some roosters in Conway, but how do you come up with Eagles in Statesboro, Panthers in Atlanta, Red Wolves in Jonesboro, Bobcats in San Marcos, Jaguars in Mobile, Trojans in Troy?

Coyotes are becomming a big problem in NC. The area where we live in is not in the city, but it's not remote by any streatch. I saw one standing on the by the road around 2 PM across from a church school playground. Sucker just watched me drive by. They are becomming less afraid of humans, which isn't a good thing.

Man those gnats are no joke. Recently I tried a nature-related activity near Savannah and those mfers were swarming and buzzing around everywhere. Ended up running to our car for safe haven

You should come during gnat season.

When exactly is that? We've been there in Sept, Oct & November and at times it looked as though they were swarming. If it's worse during the summer I don't know how y'all get anyone to step foot in that part of the country.

August and September are the worst time for the area I live. A slight breeze and they don’t bother you.

The "action" horse head logo for the Denver Broncos came out in 1997. Boise's in 2002. The first horse logo shown on Boise helmets was in 1972 with a rather ridiculous one in 76-77 while Denver had its ridiculous one 1962-66.

Boise didn't even play as a four-year school until 1968 but the Denver Broncos "copied" them. 03-lmfao
