Yes

I thought this was a facilities thread where we were talking about facilities projects anyway

I wanted to talk facilities. I feel UAB basketball should play a few games at renovated civic center. Think it would be great for program. I knew first response would be no way UAB should ever play there. So the thread moved away from facilities.

Will either soccer team, UAB or pro team, want to play in the civic center football facility at some point? Maybe the pro team following dictates this?

Well, UAB soccer hasn't drawn more than the capacity for the new & improved soccer stadium yet.

If it gets to a point where it does that or if a big time game can be scheduled I don't see it happening.

Likewise the pro team would have to prove that it needs a bigger venue.

The new stadium is supposed to be grass. This seems due to the possibility of socccer playing there at least on occasion.

Sure I think they would have a goal of attracting US national team events.

They have stated this goal publicly already as the reason it will be grass

Does it ever get to that point? I think Birmingham has the soccer community for it, and UAB could carve a good niche with it given that they're the only men's program I know of. Just might be difficult to get people in the stands with the team finishing last in the conference.

The youth leagues in the area have a ton of players and families involved in soccer.
Not sure it has expanded out to college or pro level yet.
It still may take time to have decent levels of attendance.
Not all who are involved in youth leagues care about college or pro level soccer.
My daughter doesn't really want to watch it yet, but enjoys playing it.

For special games though like the national team, etc. you can expect very large crowds.

On a side note, high schools are starting to form more lacrosse teams as well.

I don’t see the soccer team needing to play at the stadium anytime in the foreseeable future. They didn’t put 10k seats in the new soccer complex for a reason.

So is 10,000 the new capacity? I thought it was around 5000.

Of course I don't have a clue how many it seats currently either.

No, that read poorly. I was saying there weren’t 10k seats because there is no need for it.

5000 right now seems like plenty.

I think we may have had 2500 at a game against Indiana a few years ago.

The men's team needs to get back on the winning track.

Getman tweeted that it was a 6000 seat stadium.
