RE: Basketball Recruiting
Marshall lost DePaul transfer and WV native Levi Cook. And word is Dan is looking to bring in another kid. Speculation is it is JuCo Mikel Beyers (6'9/6'10 Mesa Community College, Houston TX) with 3 years of eligibility left.

Mikel Beyers

Mikel Beyers Verbal Commits
It only shows him with an offer from Presbyterian and St Joe's but this wouldn't be the 1st, 2nd or 3rd kid that Dan has taken that was flying completely under the radar, heck look no further than CJ Burks and Jon Elmore.

At 6'9/6'10 it looks like Beyers checks all the boxes to be a fit for the D'Antoni system. He takes care of the ball at the rim and is aggressive, he knows how to drive the ball and space the floor and for his size he was a 43% 3 point shooter last year. Not a big requirement for the big men but it looks like he can handle the ball as well.

We should know something later this evening or early tomorrow.

RE: Basketball Recruiting
USM will have a major upgrade in talent with the best recruiting class we have had in a long, long time. We signed 4 very talented freshmen, one is a 6'7" small forward from Europe who can shoot and has great ball handling skills. Another is a 6'7" forward too who his high school coach said is a freak of an athlete (he had a 47" vertical as a H S freshman). A rumor went around (does USM have a new recruiting technique) that he didn't have the grades. His coach said it was totally false and USM reaped the benefits by getting this 4 star forward. We also signed the top point guard in Mississippi who can score and run the O too. In addition we just signed a 6'5" point guard who's coach said he could play with anyone. The problem is that he played his senior season hurt against his coaches advice and could barely play. USM again reaped the benefits and stayed on him. We also signed a 6'9" center last year who did not get approved in time to play. He will be there mainly for defense and rebounding, but he will be an upgrade from what we had. We will have some talent and depth for the first time in years. We should at least be competitive, maybe better than competitive . But we will be relying heavily on 5 new players, four of which are true freshmen. So I am sure we will have a mixture of "wow" and "what?" moments.

UTEP added 6'11" Kaosi Ezeagu to the class on Wednesday. He was the defensive player of the year in Canada, and picked UTEP over Western Michigan and South Carolina.

He is a great addition to an already very good class for 2018. Four signed with a couple of grad transfers rumored. UTEP should be competitive in conference again.

Seriously what happened with Tim Floyd. Did he just lose his touch or passion for the game. It looked like the last 2 half years at UTEP he just didn't care at all, he run his best recruits off and just seemed to be going through the motions like a robot.

IMO he never adapted to the new generation of basketball recruits. He’s a great coach but lost the ability to connect with 18-22 year olds.

I guess one of the biggest positives that helps Dan connect with players is that he was the HC and teacher for 30 years at the HS level. He had to interact with just more than athletes and it taught him to deal with all personalities. He has taken what he learned then and apply it to todays recruits.

It also helps that he has asst. coaches that can recognize talent. But Dan is the machine behind the players signing. Seriously if you fit his system who wouldn't want to go play in a no mistake, green light, if you miss then just go to the next possession system.

UTEP picks up a D1 transfer in Anthony Tarke. He will have to sit out a year but he averaged 15.7 ppg and 6.2 rpg. Beat out Maryland for this guy.

I look for the same from Elmore soon. I wish Penava would have stayed but with the recruits coming in and Jannson Williams I think we will be just fine.

Southern Miss has had a very good spring adding high school standouts Shakur Daniel, a 6'4 pt guard, and LaDarius Marshall, a 6'6 forward with explosive hops.

Forest Hill basketball coach Jerry Currie described Marshall as “freaky athletic” and said he has only scratched the surface of his potential.

“Two words: highlight reel,” he said. “He’s a shot blocker with world-class athleticism. He can shoot the 3, he can shoot the mid-range. His timing is impeccable. He came in as a freshman with a 47-inch vertical.

“I think he’ll be a better college basketball player than he was a high school basketball player. There will be an adjustment period. He’s stiff as a board, but once he gets into a strength and conditioning program and gets more nimble and flexible, that’ll take his game to another level. He’s gonna be scary.”

Ive been saying if USM gives DOC the time to get through the sanctions that USM should and could be playing like they were under Eustachy. It might not be this upcoming season but the 19-20 season.

On paper, Doc appears to have put together a very nice class of 4 high school players. We will see how they adapt to the college game, and if they can keep developing. Many Southern Miss fans consider this the best high school signing class in quite a while, as most of the more recent signing classes have had a heavy juco presence.

Word is that Fresno State player Bryson Williams might be transferring to UTEP. He averaged 13.8 pts and 6.1 reb last season and was 3rd team MWC selection.

So, why would he do that? Not trying to be critical, but I'm just curious why a guy with an apparently good position at an MWC school would seek a transfer to UTEP, when UTEP has a ton of real serious challenges in mens BB right now?

You do know that UTEP's new coach was at Fresno St. before. Maybe the kid wants to play for the coach that recruited him and developed him the past two years.

UTEP who just experienced the worst season in its history just finished poaching the coach from that MWC school. Sounds to me like they have more serious challenges than we do.
