No doubt. The 1995 and 1996 rankings reflect just how good some of the top FCS programs were that left for the FBS. There was definitely a lot of good teams back then.

1995
#2 Appalachian State
#3 Troy
#6 Marshall
#15 Georgia Southern
#21 Boise State
#25 Middle Tennessee

1996
#1 Marshall
#7 Appalachian State
#8 Troy
#14 Georgia Southern
#18 Middle Tennessee
#25 UConn

Heck, even of just the 7 different teams listed here, there are 15 FCS national championships combined between them all.

While several of the old high end teams moved up, several other teams have stepped up, so I'll disagree that it's not as strong as it used to be. Other teams got better in the intervening period. Delaware, Villanova, ND, Montana, SHSU, JMU, etc. People may not be as familiar with the new strong teams because their own teams have moved up to FBS, but there have been teams that have stepped up to fill the "void."

Here is a bit of a surprise....

#48 Washington State

I really thought we would be seeing a string of G5's get announced once LA Tech was named.

The power shifted to the Midwest - with especially NDSU (who regularly beats p5 teams, SDSU and even USD/UND with occasionally good teams.

Nitpicky but your count of teams at the bottom needs to change to CUSA (2).

Cracking the top 50 is great. Hopefully Marshall will survive a bit longer

Yep. It was bad but in retrospect it was the catalyst for changes in the AD office that many had been screaming about for years. The head football coach was fired that night after the game which resulted in a huge buyout. The AD was gone at the end of that school year and we can go on and one about how bad he was. We're now seeing changes that on and off the field that give us great hope for the future.

In retrospect, if we had to choose loosing 66-7 or keeping our old AD and old outlook towards athletics, we'd choose the 66-7.

Fixed it. Thanks, 09. Keep me straight.

I was hoping our top three could last a little longer. Hopefully we will see Troy, Fresno State, San Diego State, Ohio and Toledo before Marshall makes the list.

Although I wish we could have more teams ranked ahead of those other G5 programs, I'm very happy with North Texas being #46. That ranking represents great improvement in the eyes of the OS in a very short time.

Since Dawgxas brought it up, our loss to Portland State was only 3 years ago.

I honestly thought we were going to land back in the 70's in this count down. Best of luck to Marshall and FAU. Hope one, or both of you can crack the top 25. 04-cheers
