Golf 2018 - both teams (sort of)
The women's tournament was too embarrassing to mention (you can go look it up if you want). It's hardly believable.

For the guys...........Chatt is up 2 strokes on the Bucs after the first round at Pinehurst. Rhea and Kim are in the top 5. I don't think I have the time/energy to follow this closely the next couple of days, so if anyone else wants to jump in, have at it.

Ok, on third thought........I'll just say the women lost to winner Furman by 68 strokes. Not a typo. And that's 101 over par. Chatt and Mercer tied for second, losing by 'only' 34 strokes. We finished sixth. WCU was last, a truly incomprehensible 167 strokes back - at 200 over par.

WTH? These kids are 101 and 200 OVER par?! Losing by 68 and 167 strokes respectively. These are supposed to be D-1 scholarship athletes. What in the name of Jiminy Christmas?

Welllll..........I dunno. They were playing at Hilton Head, and I know it was windy one or two days, but still........

I don't know how many scholarships WCU uses for women's golf. I know (from their site) they apparently have 8 players. They finished next-to-last last year (finishing ahead of Citadel), only 62 over par (to Furman's 8 under and ETSU's 30 over).

Looking at the record books....WCU won the conference title in 2003 and 2007. Since 2007, Furman has won it 5 times, interrupted by UTC winning 5 straight in the middle of Furman's 5. ETSU hasn't won it at least going back to 1994 (1 runner-up finish and 6 3rd places). Nor have we had the individual champion since then. Mimi Dymling (don't remember that name at all) was runner-up in 2002. And of course 10 of those years we were in ASun purgatory.

As recently as 2014, ETSU finished the year ranked 43rd in the country and got to play in the regional - missing the cut to participate in the nationals by only 3 strokes. Twice in that time frame we had individuals play in the nationals. Stefanie Shelton was named ASun coach of the year that year (2nd in a row and 4th overall including twice earlier in the SoCon). Back then, I sorta thought we were on the right track, but obviously that hasn't continued......

Hee Ying Loy (or "Loy Hee Ying") did make the nationals last year and finished 30th. She was high Buc this year in the conference tournament tied for 16th place. But she *is* ranked 91st in the world in amateur women's golf.

Male Bucs finished 3rd, nine behind winner UNC-G:

SoCon golf championship

Rhea, Kim, and Go ended up 6th, and T7,T7, respectively. Hulbert tied for 20th.
"Respectable", I guess.

UNC-G's first SoCon title in golf, led by freshman Nick Lyerly from Salisbury (NC, not England), who played a bit better than usual - but came into UNC-G with high credentials. 10 guys on their team, and every single one of them is from NC. Wow. But of course that is a golf-rich state.
