Look.... It don't matter if Elmer Fudd is at QB, Bloomgren has already done significant work to eliminate the "poor Rice Owls" culture that DB implanted... The team as it is currently constructed is worth 3-5 wins over last year and that's before a fall camp, an influx of new players, and a Commodore at the helm....
kudos to Coach Bloom for the culture he's creating....
Read that Vandy transfer has one pass, for a completion, in four years. Should have great fundamentals but a baller?
The key is we cannot, should not and don't appear to be hoping for "lightning in a bottle" or a silver bullet to fix everything.
With Fanuzzi and especially McGuffie, there was the expectation and action that they would somehow "save us" or whatever. Never came even remotely close to panning out.
I hope the Vandy transfer is good, but if he isn't, we still need to be ready.

I'll take 100% completion rate any day!
FTR, Shawn Stankavage's 6-yard completion came on the second play of the last Vandy drive in its 42-0 blowout win over Alabama A&M on Sept. 9, 2017, each team's second game of the season. The 'Dores got the ball with 4:08 left in the game and punted five plays later with 1:05 left.
Quote:1st and 10 at VAN 17
(4:08 - 4th) Jamauri Wakefield run for 13 yds to the Vandy 30 for a 1ST down
1st and 10 at VAN 30
(4:08 - 4th) Shawn Stankavage pass complete to Sam Dobbs for 6 yds to the Vandy 36
2nd and 4 at VAN 36
(4:08 - 4th) Jamauri Wakefield run for 3 yds to the Vandy 39
3rd and 1 at VAN 39
(4:08 - 4th) Jamauri Wakefield run for a loss of 1 yard to the Vandy 38
4th and 2 at VAN 38
(4:08 - 4th) Sam Loy punt for 47 yds, downed at the AlaAM 15

Regarding Shawn Stankavage, does anyone know how much eligibility he has left? I ask because it is not uncommon for some grad transfers (read: Cole Hunt) to have more than a year.

That article Mike linked stated that he would probably be awarded a sixth year of eligibility if he petitions for it, but he hasn't as of yet. He apparently had injury problems in the past that would get him the exemption. If he wins the starting role, I would guess he'll go for another year, but if he sits behind Tyner all fall, I wouldn't be surprised if he hangs up the cleats (nor would I think any less of him for it).
E: He did spend four years at Vanderbilt, so he's a fifth-year this fall. He's had the standard redshirt already; the exemption would reassess one of his past seasons as a medical redshirt.

I heard at a gathering last week (at the spring game) that Stank will have two yrs eligibility left, when he gets a medical hardship.
By the way, from watching the spring game, Tyner is a MUCH better qb now than what he's been the last couple years. He throws a much, much better pass. He relaxes (doesn't press) and throws a really nice spiral, for the most part right on the money.
One of the other things I noted was Cardwell, the receiver from Kinkaid, had a really nice day. He'll help us in the fall.

I was also really impressed with Caldwell. Just my opinion, but I feel like WRs and RBs will be the strength of our offense, with QBs and OL on the other side of the equation.
OO, I believe we just had the one freshman QB recruit coming in this summer from Plano Prestonwood Academy. Can’t imagine he factors in to the scenario, given that he’s listed at 6-3, 185. A redshirt freshman year in the weight room will do him good.

Thanks. At least we will be spared the discussion we would have if a true freshman beat out out Tyner and Stankavage.

Looks like two freshman coming in...The Prestonwood kid (Wiley Green) and a Dallas Jesuit guy (Parker Towns). If Stank-O-Dore is better than Tyner then for one we will have a great back-up and should be destined for glory next season...If Tyner ends up being the guy then hopefully Stank-O-Dore can fill that backup role and we are able to red shirt the freshman. Either way I think we are in for a much better season than we've had the last 3 years. Not just with wins but with enthusiasm and a fun style of football.

Or.. midway through the season we can throw one of the freshmen in with no plan whatsoever hoping for "lightning in a bottle
But yes.. I have no issue with having a freshman play. May the best man up be the one on the field. I just expect us to have a plan and not play roulette with the QB from week to week.

Man,, that would be like putting in a .175 hitter to pinch hit and hoping he could hit a three run homer to win the game.
Unheard of.

As predicted it didn't work last year. So hypotheticals dont really apply given that we saw exactly what happened. I mean, by this metric icing a kicker "works" too occasionally. The rest of the time it fails spectacularly
We also saw the 3 QB roulette in 2011(?). Trying it for the 3rd time is likely a fools errand.

Remember we have Glaesmann also; a talented player.
He was in shorts for the spring game.

Too bad. He was a good athlete just not at quarterback or maybe the old coaching staff ruined him. Where is he transferring to? (05-02-2018 11:11 AM)RiceOL83 Wrote: Looks like Smalls won’t be back. No longer listed on the roster.

In high school, a lot of people thought he was a better DB, but Plano East didn't really have a QB, and he was very athletic. I wonder if they offered him a position move and he said no, or what happened. We will likely never know, I guess.

The guys that transferred were clearly announced. Smalls was away from the team for “personal reasons.” Now he’s off the roster with no announcement. My guess is one of theee things..academics, personal issues unresolved, discipline issues. Whatever the reason best of luck to him.
