Florida Sheriff Has a Stern Message for Parents and Students After Shooting
Quote:After Friday's shooting at Forest High School in Florida, Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods implored parents to be parents and highlighted the dangers of social media.
According to The Gainesville Sun, as the shooting was being investigated, there were multiple unfounded reports of violence at other Marion County schools.
It's not uncommon during a chaotic time for faulty information to be shared on social media, and Woods used part of a press conference to outline the severity of making a false claim.
He explained the “appropriate” action will be taken each and every time someone makes a threat or puts false information online.
“The message to the students — and I'm holding my tongue back right now — this is not the appropriate time to be making false accusations or think you're funny or you think it is a joke,” he said.
Woods added a message for parents as well and told reporters, “Try being a parent as well. Make sure that your students know what's appropriate.”
He reiterated that school shootings are no “joking matter” and shared his “personal” feelings about social media:
“I think social media is the most evil thing that has ever been created. Yes, it's nice getting a message out, and yes, we use it. I use it. But look at the other side. Social media is destructive.”
CNN reported suspect Sky Bouche, a former student, brought a shotgun to school and shot at a closed door, injuring one student.
At the sound of gunfire, Marion County Sheriff's Deputy James Long rushed into the school, and Bouche was arrested without incident.
He's been charged with terrorism, aggravated assault with a firearm, culpable negligence, carrying a concealed and unlicensed firearm, possessing a firearm on school property, and possession of a short-barreled shotgun.
Bouche was also charged with interfering with school function and armed trespass on school property.
