Not sure what that plan would look like, but I know a partnership with a minor league team has been stirring for awhile. That would upgrade our ball park tremendously.
In the four years (short time I know) I’ve followed this team and learned about this program, we have at least sniffed the Top 25 at some point each season if not been a solid member of it. I honestly feel as though every year, if things fall right, this could be a top 16 team in the country. Unfortunately if that season is next season, we would not be able to host a regional due to our facilities. Which is a shame considering that even though ECU didn’t make it to their regional final, they and the town of Greenville still profited mightily from this weekend.
There’s plans for athletic facility improvements available for free online. Just google “outdoor enhancement project UNCW.” The stadium would either be brand new or a major rehaul of Brooks with the intent of being able to host a regional.
Even with Jeffers leaving (it’s all but over now), I really think this team next year can be very special. The years past, certain things haven’t lined up correctly. In 2015, the pitching staff was loaded, but the offense was lacking. 2016, the offense was phenomenal, but the pitching depth wasn’t there. Last year could have been the year, but our offense took an unexpected step back and the pitching wasn’t there past Friday, and they still earned a 2 seed in the CAS and went to the conference final. This year, our pitching was unbelievably deep even with returner Zarion Sharpe injured, and the offense became hot at the right time for us to make a good run. Even so, I saw a stat claiming that to end the regular season they won like 16 of 21 games to end the season (could be off a little). But with half of our roster being first year members of the team, inexperience killed us, especially defensively.
Make no mistake, this is one of the best programs in the country. For the amount of money that goes into it (very little comparatively to every other team in Greenville), they still made a regional final and made a case as one of the 32 best teams in the land with signature wins throughout the season. Mark Scalf might be the best coach in North Carolina considering he does all of this with 35/38 players being from North Carolina. I hope they can return as many pieces as possible next year and take that leap forward, and I hope the community really gets behind them and we start to get some great crowds at Brooks. This program deserves it.
