RFP out for Savage Ped Bridge over Ottawa River

Info booth goes away. Could be a great opportunity to improve this gateway. Wonder if any thought was given to widening the bridge more for crowds leaving Savage

OK the design engineer is going to come out here.

UT has a set "standard" that they have implemented for pedestrian bridges with other bridges on campus. Why are they going thru a short list and interview process of the consultant teams? They already know what they want.

This puts extra financial burden on the design teams. There are plenty of local firms to do the work so travel is not an issue but there is expense involved in preparing documents for both submittals and the interview itself.

I am not saying they should award it to the firm that did Carlson Bridge but the letter of qualifications should suffice to make the selection in this case.

ODOT and other DOTs awards plenty of similar projects with just a letter of interest

With the other bridges (including the new Root Bridge, UT Facilities utilized the Civil Engineering department in the Senior Design studio, but for this one, they're bidding out the work. It is a bit odd, especially given the budgetary constraints that the University is seeing.

Actually the new David Root bridge-and replacements for Carlson Library and Savage bridges-are all funded by state capital funds not the University operating bridge. And although the Senior Design class studio did projects on all three-and those were shared with the project team and contractors-none of the student designs ended up as the final bridge design, in each case a full design build was required.

UT is looking at associated designs and projects to completing reconfigure the roadway off of Secor (UT main entrance) towards the current intersection for lot 10 and the east parking garage, including sidewalks, crossings, lanes etc... Replacement of Savage bridge and associated improvements on the north side (kiosk) are first stage in that work. Plus connection of the Savage bridge to the south will be tied into eventual sidewalk work to a new overpass walking bridge across Douglas to area north of Engineering and new north south walking trail.

I would hope that UT would consider raising that intersection to allow pedestrians to walk beneath the entering roadway. Or install an underpass to the north of the intersection
