Yes, my kids have been going to NIU games since they were born, Huskie fans thru & thru. My son who will be a soph is a little down trying to get his peers fired up to go to football & hoop games. Everything seems like such a battle to get positive momentum, but I will continue to be the source of positivity to NIU

Your son probably has firsthand knowledge of what is causing the lack of interest among his peers. Is it team performance? Lack of marketing by Athletics? Lack of building excitement? Perception that NIU is in a lower conference? If the reason(s) is identified, perhaps it can be addressed.

They have better things to do than use their Gnat sized attention span on their schools sports. Where have you been living, under a rock or in the 1970's?

I was at NIU from 2006-2013 for undergrad and grad. I think the issue with lack of student interest is the sports market around here is over-saturated with pro teams. Everyone and his friend is or knows someone who is a bears/bulls/blackhawks/cubs/sox fan. The Chicago pro-sports culture is extremely dominant in this area. No amount of marketing is going to convince an NIU student, "Hey forget about (insert Chicago pro team)! You know what's really cool? Come watch NIU play Akron on a Thursday night!"

This is one of the many facets of the challenges facing NIU in trying to build a fanbase.

And during that time the pro teams, for the most part were good. Cubs made the playoffs multiple times and the Hawks won multiple Stanley Cup championships. Everyone loves a winner and the pro side will always win out when it is close by. I always look back at DePaul basketball in the very early 80s. They captivated and owned the city back then in a very large part because all of the pro teams stunk. Then the Sox were good in 83, the Cubs in 84, the Bears in 85.....and though DePaul was still decent, they faded away in the eyes of the fans.

It will be interesting to see how Loyola does attendance-wise this year. I'll bet they'll see a significant jump in attendance and even more so if they continue their winning ways. It would be the same at NIU if the teams were winning and showcased on the national stage.

I would expect to see something very similar to our Orange Bowl jump. I think the thing Loyola faces is while the Bears, Hawks, Bulls and Sox all stink, the Cubs are good. Also, it’s really tough, in basketball, to sustain that high level unless you are the top program getting pro players for a year. In DePaul’s run they were clearly one of the best three or for teams in the country for a few years (despite tournament results post 1979) because the players stayed for three to four years even when they were sure fire NBA top picks (Aguirre/Cummings).

And other college teams. A couple years ago I was in a class at NIU and we had to go around the room and say our favorite college football and basketball teams as an icebreaker. Interestingly enough, even the NIU basketball player in my class didn't say NIU...

Could you imagine Sutton Smith not answering NIU? Some athletes have “it” and some don’t. That difference in attitude between bleeding your team’s colors and apathy separates the cream from the crop.

Tell the students there is a $5 cover, have a DJ during timeouts playing some recent pop music none of us has heard of and perhaps and we can start serving $10 Moscow Mules and somecraft beer like 3 Floyd's or 2 Brother's for $9 a can. I bet a few thousand would think it's can't miss!

Do you know who Sutton Smiths favorite team is? I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a team he grew up watching.

I don't see why they don't sell alcohol on the east side. Most students (that bother showing up) leave at halftime because they start to sober up. If the student center can serve alcohol in between classes then why not the stadium?

RE: article in Northern Star.... more cuts coming, bummer
I Googled "what schools let students in for free to college football" and this 2013 article came up.

https://www.athleticbusiness.com/college...dance.html

Very interesting, especially this part which is what I was thinking may be an idea for NIU before I pulled it up.....

It has become an unwelcome tradition at South Carolina for students to leave games at halftime, prompting coach Steve Spurrier last November to publicly implore students to act like they're part of a winning program and stay to the end of the Gamecocks' home finale. The team won the game to go 7-0 at Williams-Brice Stadium, "but we still had that mass exit," USC alum and current student ticket coordinator Adrienne White says. "I can't pinpoint what it is."

Everything from the party scene in Columbia to the pull of social media may be at play, and South Carolina has so far considered providing students with free bottled water per their request on particularly hot game days, as well as other giveaways available only during the second half. As the only public school in the SEC to admit students to games free of charge, South Carolina is also contemplating charging for tickets in the hopes of attaching value to attendance.

Nothing is "free" at NIU. That "free" football ticket for students at NIU is costing them over $500 in athletic fees per year.

Plus, if you added an additional fee by charging for tickets, Huskie Stadium will look like our basketball "crowds".

RE: article in Northern Star.... more cuts coming, bummer
To enter the game is free. The charge is for athletic fees, a sunken cost. If they go to a game, they don't pay any more. If they don't go to a game, they don't pay any less. There is no tradeoff. You pay taxes to upkeep things like parks whether you go or not. While the tax is collected be it on state, county, park district level you don't pay an individual tax for every one of them.

And perhaps there is a perception of "free" by the students. They don't value the game since again, they already paid for it fees and/or aren't payin any more. They have no need to attend to justify the $. That is true of many events, goods in general. I have gotten plenty of free tickets for small crap and never went. I, and many others I am sure, have also picked up a lot of crap at booths such as festivals and never used. But if you paid for it, you are more likely to use. Food/drink is also a good example.

I am not saying it would work. But if you are lookiing to increase attendence AND are willing to gamble on losing guaranteed $, at least short term, it's worth a try. Lower fees by X amount, then charge the same to get in perhaps. Have more gimmicks, albeit our last one with the 4k students a game or whatever to get year end prize didn't go so well.03-shhhh If they truly cared about boosting student attendance, do something. I mean NIU is a good football program now and somehow is losing steam. Everyone commends the party atmosphere the students present right outside the stadium. Does it really help? I don't know. But many then condemn them for not going and/or not staying. I'm not in marketing/sales but it seems I and many others on here could not do any worse to get students to the game.

I guess except those who point to the budget as an excuse for everything that goes wrong and NIU and the State in general.03-melodramatic

Not shocking at all given our basketball team’s track record.
