I'm guessing it's because a couple years ago, his big thing was if we're going to play some of the bigger programs on the road, we want some type of return game. However, he hasn't been able to do that now.
You're right though, playing a FSU on the road once in a while isn't in itself bad, it's probably the combined picture though, also having to go Iowa and BYU.

Wait a minute. He acts like playing FSU is a bad thing? Who is the one who scheduled these games? He did it for the money. Now he is talking out of both sides of his mouth??

RE: article in Northern Star.... more cuts coming, bummer
From the Northern Star:
“One of the more noticeable things has been game guarantees for football,” Frazier said. “We took a game we wouldn’t normally take, the Florida State game. We added that game to this year’s schedule for the amount of $1.6 million. What’s significant about that is we wouldn’t have taken that game because of the budget. We took it because of the $1.6 million.”
Frazier said adding 2018 opponents such as the University of Iowa, the University of Utah and Brigham Young University was also a direct reaction to budgetary cuts.
Why haven't we been playing these games more? If schools are willing to pay NIU 1M+ to play a football game, Frazier would be a moron not to schedule those games. Being competitive and beating big name schools is how you build your brand. Beating MAC schools on a Tuesday night is how you kill it.

Play too many of those blood money games and your season is over before you've played a home game or a MAC game.
Crowds are nonexistent and team is demoralized.

I agree, but I don't think that's STF's concern. He's doing it for the big payouts. If we happen to squeeze out a win, great, but this is all for the money. Our battle starts with the MAC games. He knows we won't get any attendance at home, so that's why the money will come from those big games. Gosh, I remember those seasons when we were getting 20K+ per game. Unfortunately, due to several reasons, that's all in the past now.

RE: article in Northern Star.... more cuts coming, bummer
I'm happy with the out of conference schedule this year. I'd rather see the Huskies play the name-brand teams, not just for the money but for the recognition. Taking 4 to Tallahassee for the game.
I remember NIU going to #1 Ohio State as 28 point dogs and almost pulling off the upset. I'm not one for "moral victories" but what a game that was.
And of course last year's Nebraska game.
NIU needs to prove it can hang with the big boys.

The possibility of a P5 road win+ $1.6 million
vs
FCS homegame.
I'm taking the money, national exposure, etc. It's only blood money if you're totally overmatched, which NIU is not.

Again, I believe that NIU should schedule 4 OOC big money away games. The money would more than make up for the anemic home attendance and season ticket sales. Of course, there would only be 4 home games - and 2 of those would be midweek November games - but season tickets could be offered at rock bottom prices to try to get some people to attend the games. Sell the season tickets for $60 or less, and maybe fans will show up for a couple games. In addition, they would need to reduce the premium seat fees, which may further induce people to buy season tickets. Of course, this may also result in a drop in season ticket sales, but NIU will already have their windfall in the bank from the 4 OOC games.

You can get a season ticket for $60 today.

My sentiments exactly. The best MAC (NIU, Toledo, WMU) teams can certainly hang with the mid/lower big 10 and Big 12. May not win, but it'll be competitive.
The announcers for the Nebraska game last year were gushing about Carey's record against Big10 teams.
They didn't bring up his bowl record, luckily.

For the cheaper season ticket packages, yes. Then, with 4 home games, those should drop to the neighborhood of $40. You can't expect season ticket prices to be what they are now if NIU goes down to 4 home games with 2 of them most people can't attend.

Perhaps you need to find another team to root for Big Man because you're detached from reality. Playing games simply for a big paycheck is going to virtually guarantee more losses and far more injuries as happened in the past if you truly knew anything about NIU football history. Ask Pettibone about getting beat up playing at West Virginia. at Wisconsin and at Iowa consecutively before losing at home to Western Illinois followed by a thumping at Miami (FL) before a one-point loss at Toledo. If not for all the injuries, the roster going into the season would not have lost to WIU and would have beat Toledo. Losing to big name schools is how you cripple your team and get branded a loser. If all you care about is NIU playing Florida State and won't tune in to watch the Huskies versus UNLV then you're not really a genuine Huskie fan and are simply a football elitist. Keep on watching what CBS, ABC, ESPN, et all dish out and all you do is reinforce the TV contracts that force the MAC to play on Tuesdays and make certain the G5s never catch up to the P5s.
Go back and read Frazier's comments carefully. He understands you need to schedule some opponents to help the budget but is essentially saying the reason for taking the FSU game is not to add another "name" opponent, but because the $1.6 million guarantee doesn't happen too often and it was too good a deal to pass up. Iowa, Utah and BYU are not $1.6 million games, chances are each is under the $1 million level. Part of NIU's reputation has been built on beating MAC teams on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and the occasional Saturday league game, it's called being an annual MAC title contender and going to consecutive bowl games.

Detached from reality? Perhaps it is you who is detached. Alumni like these games. They pay attention to these games. We make money from these games. We are worried about attendance if we start 0-3 the team lost to 3 BCS schools? I'd wager my life savings that the attendance on the 4th would be the same if the team was 3-0 with wins against Troy, EIU and Kansas vs going 0-3 against FSU, Iowa and OSU. The friends I attended NIU with talk more about the game against OSU in 2016 than any of the MAC championship games they have won. The 03 Bama game....Last year's Nebraska game......the 05 Michigan game.
We want Division I football? Then play the best. I'd rather lose by 40 to FSU than ever play Idaho again.

I have friends coming from NY to see the Utah and Iowa games. Pretty sure they wouldn’t if it was against Presbyterian and Idaho.

This year’s OOC schedule is probably my favorite of all time. Home against Utah? Quick Labor Day Saturday drive to Iowa? Road games at BYU and FSU? It’s a videogame schedule from heaven.
Labor Day Saturday 2014 in Evanston I’ll never lose nostalgia for. That sea of red.

Be prepared to lose your $16. I like to see one big OOC road game. I have no need to see 3 or more. Having the team competitive is important. Playing crap at home won't draw fans either. Get one good road OOC and try for 2 midrange or better home OOC games and that will have people in the stands at the start of the season. If they pull off, or are in position to win late, that will get people back later in the season.

Crazier is only one person. He can't be everywhere at every moment. His budget constraints make his job very hard. You guys act like he sits on his a$$ and does nothing.
