article in Northern Star.... more cuts coming, bummer
http://northernstar.info/sports/budget-s...c91b6.html

Northern Illinois needs support now more than ever, those of you that don't buy season tickets or donate need to reconsider if it is important to you. That's all about that.

This is why I keep saying that, if NCAA rules permit, they need to schedule all 4 away games at big schools for the payouts. And they need to pull out of that ESPN contract - and the MAC, if necessary - so that fans have more than a couple games to attend. This is a matter of life and death, and the time to end the death spiral is now.

This is reality boys and girls.

STF has next to nothing of a budget from which to staff Athletics. Those who continue to blame STF are clueless.

There are fundraising techniques that can be done with little additional money by the staff that's already there. It's as simple as working their current donors to generate more or even continued donations. This is not being done. When tuition dollars and state appropriations are down, they need to put more effort into bringing in more donations. Have any of the donors here received a call? Have any of the season ticket holders who are not HAF donors received a call? Have any single game ticket buyers received a call about purchasing season tickets?

RE: article in Northern Star.... more cuts coming, bummer
Frazier said the decline in enrollment at NIU has affected them heavily, as every student enrolled pays a $797.04 athletic fee to cover admission to sporting events. That money goes to support special services and privileges all over campus.

Can someone explain to me what special services and privileges students are paying for from the athletic fee ?

Not cutting a sport? (yet) Thats good. Hope they get NIU enrollment back over 20k ASAP.

Illinois politicians should be drawn and quartered for putting us in this pinch, via budget constraints caused by mismanagement as well as tarnished state/education image. Such an unnecessary uphill battle NIU is currently burdened with.

The convenient excuse is to blame the state, even Carey did so in the article. In all honesty the state situation is going to get worse before it gets better, so the administration at NIU needs to pull their heads out of their asses and move forward.

Declining enrollment is the biggest issue, and I know that although NIU and SIU in particular have seen reductions, ISU's enrollment continues to increase. We need to figure out what they are doing right.

I am with Dogfan, time to schedule 4 out of conference road paydays, and be done with it.

I think they've allowed the perception of the NIU campus being "sketchy" in terms of crime, to stick, reality notwithstanding. Somehow they have to fix that.

Going to take money to fix that from NIU and Dekalb. Demo the section 8 buildings on Annie Glidden and pushing those type of buildings far away from campus would be a great start. Reducing the amount of off campus living would actually help or only allowing the renter to be an enrolled studen, but most landlords are going to take what they can get in terms of renters, so will be hard to eliminate that.

When you drive around campus a lot of the places do look "sketchy", not well kept and not inviting, which does not help when you have campus visits for prospects of students. Need A LOT more buildings that look like Barsema's buildings and new hall. Places like Graham look like a dated elementary school and basically is the entrance to the campus as most take annie glidden.

All the fundraising we can even do is probably just a scratch on the surface... gotta fix enrollment for anything to get viable again.

“Another is enrollment decline, which we get hit heavily because 40 percent of our operating budget is student-fee based,” Frazier said. “So when we have a decrease in enrollment, that affects us as well.”

WHAT MARKETING?

If we had an ISU recruitment and marketing plan we would not be down 5000 students.

I think most people understand, realize and respect the financial issues of the university and state and how they affect athletics. However, it costs NOTHING for STF to work his way through the stands, acknowledge people by name, etc. A good portion of the distaste I read on here about STF is that he is just not the people person like some of the ADs of the past (Groth, Phillips). I really cost nothing to appeal to everyone, including the non or minor donors (in comparison).

That is true and it makes me wonder if where he came from what you suggest wasn't even necessary.

I agree. Fixing enrollment will help the most the fastest. The states financial health does not like it will be changing anytime soon.

For those of you who bid on an item during the victor e ball I called and spoke with Lisa Stocksdale. If there are any items you were interested in but did not win during the bidding such as a jersey, helmet, etc. they may be willing to still sell items if available. I bought two additional jerseys. Was more than I should have spent but figured the money is going towards a worthy cause (ps...don’t mention this to my wife)

I don't understand why Frazier is acting like playing FSU is a bad thing. I want NIU to play schools that will pay 1M. I guarantee that I will tune in to watch this game, but a non-conference game against UNLV? Probably not.
