RE: How many teams should go to Belt basketball tourney?
12!
Suck it up buttercup, the world isn't fair and sometimes the best overall team throughout the regular season, isn't the best team come March

Fewer than 12!
Suck it up, buttercup, the world isn't fair and sometimes the worst overall teams throughout the SBC regular season (which will have truly horrifying RPIs) aren't worthy of playing in ANYONE'S conference tournament and their seasons should be over.

Four. Two days. Bill regular season as opening round of the tournament. Minimize risk of wasted days off jobs. Fans will commit.

#1 team finished 14-4 in league play, but is 0-4 in its last 4 games. This could be with or without an injury that changes the dynamics of the team. #2 team finishes 13-5 in league play, but has won its last 12 games all by double digits. Should there be a tournament or do you just send team #1?
Scenario 2:
The top 2 teams tie with a 15-1 record. Let’s say their one loss is to each other, then who goes? There isn’t a tiebreaker to be had unless you use RPI rank. Would you have a one game free for all? If so, who hosts? If the loss wasn’t to each other, are we really going to tiebreaks to determine champ?
When Ivy League went for years without a tournament, they always had a playoff to break any ties for the title. Usually at a Neutral Site. There wasn't even a head to head tiebreak.

Time to be smart about this and just send eight.
Thursday play-in games on the home floor of highest rated teams.
5 v 12
6 v 11
7 v 10
8 v 9
Saturday at tournament site.
8-9 w plays 1
7-10 w plays 2
6-11 w plays 3
5-12 w plays 4
Better attendance for 1st round games. The conf doesn't spend a bunch of unnecessary $. As a one bid league the conference has a better shot of the best team making the NCAA's.
