MyBB Will Penny Run Some Zone?
A good way to protect smaller guards on defense is go 2-3 or 3-2.

All the film I've watched on East was a man press (always 2 trappers, 2 intercepters, 1 basket protector) dropping back into halfcourt man.

I know he's an NBA guy and wants to get after it but I wonder if he'll put in some zone, especially if Lomax and Harris are on the court together.

Maybe as a last resort, but he’s stated specifically that he wants to use the Huggins-style pressure defense.

hard to press quality teams. Half court trapping will work with long trappers.

Penny played a 2-3 zone at East. Had Chandler out front, hid Lomax on the baseline. Lomax short, but strong enough to put a body on a big.

I remember an interview 2 years ago where he was talking about using a 1 3 1 zone often.

Nice, and I think that's what Tigx meant, a 1-3-1. Length up top to make a ball reversal have to be a lob pass and a little guy with good lateral quickness running the baseline.

That's what I was after, something to go to if you don't match up well man to man. Thanks guys!

To be the best college coach you can be, you have to have zone in your playbook. It has to be an option. Since Penny is obviously striving to be the best, I feel certain that he will have run zone occasionally.

RE: Will Penny Run Some Zone?
My guess is he will play 80-90% man and a 3/4 ZONE trap. Seems this team is built to press especially Martin with his long wing span-getting steals and deflections. Two small quick guards in pressure D means that much less time they will be in straight man and hopefully creating havoc with poor ball handling teams.

40 minutes of hell is not going to work anymore but 7-8 could and will for well coached press teams.

I expect to see a lot of 1 3 1. He will have a long player at the top of the key causing chaos.

Some of you may remember when Pastner ran the 1 3 1 with Barton at the top of the key causing turnovers.
