Whoop-whoop!! JK featured in Boston article on athletic training device
Boston startup’s app helps marathon runner train smarter

Quote:Karlgaard, athletics director at Rice University, last year began looking for a tool the school’s athletes and coaches could use to monitor and improve performance, and stumbled upon the Whoop, an activity and recovery tracking wristband ... made by a Boston startup.

He was hoping/expecting to break 3:00 for the marathon, but because of the horrid weather conditions (wind chill was below freezing) he finished in a still very impressive 3:05 + change.

Yeah I saw the highlights. Unbelievably cold weather for the Marathon - I think it was the slowest winning time for the women since 1985 (and not coincidentally, might have been the first time for an American to win that race for that reason since that year).

Does he have eligibility left? He might be able to score some conference points in the 10K.

Why would he carry anything that would weigh him down like that? I'm not a professional runner but I would probably let somebody hold my wallet until I was done with the race. And do running shorts even have pockets? Even if they did I doubt he would carry that much in pre-1964 coins.

Anyway, congrats to JK on a great showing, and the nice publicity for Rice!

I'm assuming that was a Matthew 26:15 reference.

Well, if you're referring to the Hank Williams song, I don't really see the connection.

I'll play. Are you referencing Pottersville from "It's a Wonderful Life" (cf. the potter's field that was bought with Judas's 30 pieces of silver)?

Yes! I have not seen a verifiably sourced historical account of it, so the story is likely apocryphal, but it is a good story. I first read it in this 2004 column by George Will (which also contains one of my favorite of his lines: "most fiction, like most of most things, is mediocre"):
