A lot of what Norvell likes to do he couldn’t run. Some of the sideline conversations , Norvell was noticeably frustrated. His numbers were fine, but anyone in this system will have good stats.I’m not saying White won’t be the guy next year, but I do feel the job will be more open than most think.
Well said.
You two are dreaming.
Josh Pastner; Acc coach of the year. Stats can be misleading
Dude, coach of the year isn't a stat, it's a vote. Stats are stats.
You and karter need to drop this silliness that the backup QB is the best QB. Norvell knows what he is doing.
The stats are great and White is a good quarterback, but there really are cases where stats don't tell the whole story. Let's say McBride is slightly inferior to White when it comes to understanding the offense. Let's say he's slightly less accurate. Those would be hypothetical pluses for White.
Let's say that McBride has a stronger arm than White and can stretch the field and actually hit a few long passes. If this is a case, then McBride won't have to fit so many balls into tiny windows because the other team has all 11 defenders within 15 yards of the line of scrimmage. Let's say that some of those balls that White fits into tight windows become routine completions with McBride because the ball is getting there much quicker.
You can take it a step further. Let's say that McBride only takes half the sacks that White does because he is more mobile. Look at the last plays in the Navy and UCF games as an example. A more mobile quarterback could have either run for a first down against Navy, or wouldn't have been under such extreme pressure in both games because he could have avoided it. You also have to account for the fact that McBride is going to be able to run for more yards than White.
Odds are that White will be the starter next year, but if I was Norvell, I might be slightly intrigued by a coach's son who is a film room junkie, who is 10X faster with a much bigger arm. The main thing is that unless White shows a huge improvement in mobility and arm strength, he has a defined ceiling, and we are guaranteed to be good but not great.
So IMO, if Norvell is going for greatness, we probably don't have a shot at that with White. If McBride or another quarterback is less consistent, but has a higher ceiling, it changes everything.
