Ugh!!
How many folks read the South Lyons paper vs. how many eye balls watched EMU vs. Army in FB or Watch EMU vs. TOL MBB (twice) on CBS Sports?
As we say in the D.C. area, this is all 'inside the Beltway stuff.'
Quite frankly this was a 24-hour story in S.E. Michigan and a non-story outside (of S.E. Michigan).
Don't know if it make the N.Y. Times, USA Today or Washington Post.
You can't be serious.
Here is a short list of some of the media that has covered this.
Detroit Free Press
Detroit News
MLive
WRUF Gainesville
Sports Business Daily
Hustlebelt
Newburgh Gazette, IL
Inside Higher Ed
And yes, USA Today
The list goes on and on. Many of them contain statements pointing out how bad our football program has been. I didn't even touch on sport specific media outlets which have been pounding us.
I can just imagine what football coaches from other schools are telling kids CC is recruiting. "The school is in financial trouble. They break their promises. Don't trust them. Here read this Mom and Dad."
One piece of advice when debating EMU sports; don't ever bring up the number of people who actually watch our football and basketball team as if there's something good about it. We cover up substantial number of seats at both Rynearson and the Convo because nobody ever sits there. When we get a highlight play from a home game on national news it frequently comes with a snide remark like too bad nobody was there to see it.
1). My point is that it was a 24-hour story. Not a recruiting issue.
2). As far as football and basketball I wasn't talking about home attendance. Butts in seats in the modern era represent a small fraction of eye balls watching an event. College and Pro sports are media events. If 65K watch a NFL game there might millions watching on TV.
When we play Purdue (FB), Kansas and Kentucky (MBB), there could be say 100K+ (WILD GUESS) viewers watching on television in the states where the events are being played.
99% of them probably never watched a collegiate wrestling, softball, etc. event.
I don't want to parrot BobW, but this is how a school gets publicity (case in point UMBC), get a bowl game, or even make the MAC semis for MBB, play big name opponents or teams with big followings (e.g.. Army, Purdue, Kansas, Kentucky, etc.).
We got more POSITIVE publicity for our Bahamas Bowl appearance than NEGATIVE publicity for dropping four sports.
