No. ESPN isn't acquiring squat here (roughly speaking). ESPN is a national broadcaster. The RSNs own *local* broadcast/cable rights. They're not transferable.

If what you all are saying were the case, then FS1 would have launched with a Yankees game every Sunday, simulcast with Fox-partnered YES. It didn't, because it doesn't work that way.

Sorry, but the Yankees broadcasting to the NYC area alone is far from squat, it's massive all by itself. And that's just one thing.

That's a Disney acquisition, not an ESPN acquisition.

But as SoCalBobCat has brought to my attention, you CAN move games from the local basket to the national basket, if you own both sides of the game. FS1 *does* run Yankee games simulcast with YES, when the Yankees are playing team that broadcasts on a Fox-owned RSN.

So ESPN *does* have access to a good chunk of what Disney just bought through the RSNs.

This should be one of the biggest benefits to ESPN from acquiring the RSNs. They reinforce ESPN branding by showing ESPN programming on the RSNs around the local game broadcasts, and cross-promoting upcoming games on ESPN channels. They're making the content anyway, why not bring it to the RSNs as well. Show an episode of SportsCenter or PTI after every live game on an RSN, or make it sport-specific -- show an episode of "The Jump" or "NBA Countdown" before or after a local NBA broadcast, show "Baseball Tonight" before or after a local MLB broadcast, etc., etc.

I think what the Disney CEO was talking about was more than that, though. He was talking about how they could improve the game experience for the local watcher and improve coverage and highlights for the national follower of that local content by integrating the coverage between Bristol and the local broadcast production. More talking head content, analysis, highlights, crap like that.

I don't necessarily agree, even with all the layoffs, I still think ESPN has an overload of talking heads, commentators, analysts, etc. But some viewers live for that.

I had discounted that as management prattle. But you might be right here--maybe ESPN is getting high on their own supply, as it were.

I really don't think there's any value added in replacing a locally produced pregame show specific to the Indiana PAcers (or whoever) with an NBA Today produced in Bristol. Yes you save some amount of money, (1 show instead of 22, 23 if you count the hour it fills for ESPN/2/U/News) but I don't think it amounts to much.

Having the ability to put MLB/NBA/NHL games on ESPN/2/U/News is significant, though. That's actually really bad for college sports, now that I'm absorbing the news.

If ESPN can fill timeslots with pro sports, it doesn't need college sports as much.

You probably don't save much money -- if you're comparing the cost of running an episode of "Baseball Tonight" before a Rangers or Angels game with the local pregame show, which is nothing more 30 minutes of air time before the game being filled by the announcers that you are already paying.

On the other hand, I doubt there are many fans who think the 30 minute filler of play by play announcers talking to each other is indispensable. Seems like a wash, and using "Baseball Tonight" reinforces the ESPN branding better than having Local Play-by-play Guy and Local Ex-Jock chatting for half an hour.

I'm skeptical that ESPN will be allowed to do much of that, especially for NBA and NHL games, which have competing national rights-holders. If it's the NHL, college hoops shouldn't have much to worry about; one reason ESPN gave way back when they gave up NHL TV rights was that NHL regular-season telecasts on ESPN consistently got poorer ratings than ESPN's college basketball telecasts.

There's another who I can't name for fear of getting banned who's an out right ESPN hack. I don't know if he's employed by them...more than likely he roots blindly for ESPN because his conference is owned entirely by ESPN for decades.

Haters usually have a personal axe to grind. They are often younger, and don't remember the days before ESPN, when maybe there were two college football games on a week.

Ok, I've admittedly not read this entire thread to see if it's been mentioned previously. Fox is looking to get more involved in the "Combat Sports" game, and the capital this frees up could potentially lead them to purchasing...if not WWE outright (which is on the table for the right price) then for paying a decent sum to get the broadcast rights to WWE's live events Raw and SmackDown. There's an interest in those as they're more of a "known commodity" vs. UFC. Scripted, planned entertainment vs. a "live event" that could end up only lasting seconds.

I’m 41 and my Dad was taking me to Iowa games since the late 70’s. Been to close to 1,000 college athletic events and watched every single game Iowa game growing up with “Mack” McCausland on local tv. I was doing just fine before espn. I’m doing fine without it. You love espn because LSU (SEC SECSEC) is tied in with ESPN for the rest of your life. You claim not be a conference homer but you seem to love the SEC and the ACC—the latter because they are tied in with your beloved espn for our lifetimes.

Wrong on at least two counts. I am an admitted conference homer - in hoops, the Big East. In football, I follow USF, they get all of my support. LSU? I like them because they are local, so root for them, but nothing like USF.

Beyond that, I've criticized the SEC many times for their deal with ESPN, which I think is way more favorable to ESPN than the SEC. Ditto for the ACC.

ESPN is awesome because I can see a bajillion college football, basketball, NBA, MLB, and other sports than I ever could growing up. To me, that's a massive plus, and well worth whatever share of my cable bill they gobble up.

IMO, the silliest criticism of ESPN comes from supporters of G5 conferences that say it "holds them back" or something. If you really have been following college football since the 1970s, you know damn well that conferences with the makeup of the current AAC and Sun Belt were completely invisible then, and that it's thanks mostly to ESPN that their exposure and visibility has increased enormously since then. Circa 1980, a school like Memphis or Tulsa or ECU could go literally years without ever having a football game on national TV, and now basically all of their games are. That's a ginormous difference in a positive direction.

G5-type conferences have never had it so good, and that's thanks mostly to ESPN.

Actually I’ll give you a conference that was doing well and could point to espn’s Propaganda as hurting them: The WAC. Decent conference with good bowls before espn downgraded them with the “Non-BCS” label in the 90’s. They were getting too good for their own good and got slapped. CUSA 1.0 was a big surprise in college football. ESPN helped destroy them as they were hitting their stride in the early 2000’s.
So there are two examples of “G5-types” who did have it better before ESPN’s shenanigans.

I don't know about you, but I have no true "memories" of things that happened in my first two years of life. Which is how long you had lived before ESPN. So the reality is that you simply can't know what college sports was like before ESPN, which is basically what quo said.

Sports fans don't "love" ESPN. They appreciate how much it has done for college sports.

...the midmajor's are getting exposure they never could've dreamed up even compared to 20 years ago. The market is the market and mid-major conferences are niche slots. Yes a good story line comes along once in awhile and America watches them in big numbers (like Chicago-Loyola this March) but they get paid what they are worth after production costs. The only conference that has a gripe right now is the AAC. They should be getting paid a minimum of $5M per team IMHO...if not closer to $10M

Billy is a tad out of his element here...I remember back in the 70's if Cuse had one game televised (national or regional) a season in FB that was it. The best programs had more televised but only about 3-4 games. You would look forward to the Sunday highlight show...and hope to see 20 secs of action. It was the radio and the newspaper only if you didn't attend in person.

In basketball Cuse was a regional power back in the 70's and the best we hoped for was about 2 regional games broadcast on TVS during the regular season.

ESPN changed the game.

Why is that funny? Since I was a little 5 year old kid I remember watching Iowa basketball games on local tv with Mac. Seriously.....what am I saying that you have an issue with?

You and others on here do hide your pro ESPN feelings.
There's another who I can't name for fear of getting banned who's an out right ESPN hack. I don't know if he's employed by them...mheore than likely he roots blindly for ESPN because his conference is owned entirely by ESPN for decades.

I don't hide my feelings, I've said ESPN is awesome many times. I'm not afraid to criticize them either, as I am with PLUS.

Haters usually have a personal axe to grind. They are often younger, and don't remember the days before ESPN, when maybe there were two college football games on a week.

We didn't have a lot of money. We didn't have cable tv until 1993. Again, I watched college games on local tv or ABC when Iowa would get put on there. I had no other choice as we didn't have cable/ESPN.

Even if you think ESPN 'propaganda' hurt the WAC and CUSA, the schools in those conferences make more money and get way, way, more exposure thanks to ESPN than they ever did previously.

In 1980, no current WAC or CUSA team was ever heard of in college football circles, or seen either.

I can.
I was born in 1976. My family did not have cable tv until 1993. I didn't watch ESPN because I couldn't.
