Carroll's pitches don't have much movement and his velocity is average at best along with his control. Throws a very hittable ball.

His stat line is 2.18 ERA, 20.2 innings pitched, 12 hits, .162 opponents batting average, amongst the top 4 or 5 on the team in all categories. Are stats irrelevant?

I've watched him pitch a few times.

He's fine against really bad competition (majority of his work) and really bad against anyone decent. And the coaching staff knows this.

Keep in mind that these stats would be much worse if his start against UTSA were included

Didn’t our other pitchers go against the same bad competition?

Sure. But players like Sandlin and, to a lesser extent, Powers and Powell have shown they can provide quality innings against teams with a pulse. Carroll hasn't. There was a reason his leash was so short on Sundays and he's seen very little work since.

Crazy to think Carroll was a guy that Berry thought should be a weekend starter as a true freshman.

Beagle, from what you’re saying—and I kind of assumed but wasn’t sure—this just isn’t a staff with many quality D1 arms. It’s not like those underachieving 2013-15 staffs where most of the guys threw in the 90s with good breaking stuff but couldn’t put it together.

Yeah, I’d say we have 2 draftable guys on this staff. Sandlin and Wallner. Last year we had 5. Pretty miraculous that our numbers are better than they were last year.

Powers could perhaps go late rounds (like 30th or later) simply because he's a decent left-handed starting pitcher.

Re: Carroll. He’ll play in the Cape Cod League this summer. The CCBL (and the USA Collegiate team) typically only pick the best of the best to play up there. Great opportunity for him.
