WAC Is Very Interested In Tarleton State
WAC/Tarleton State
Quote:But the study also says that the Western Athletic Conference “has expressed tremendous interest in Tarleton State joining the conference and serving as a travel partner for the University of Texas–Rio Grande Valley.”
If Tarleton joined the WAC, the university would need an affiliate conference for its football program. In the study, the Southland Conference was used for Football Championship Subdivision benchmarking purposes, due to the WAC’s lack of established football program.
According to the feasibility study recently released by Collegiate Consulting, the Southland Conference is the most geographically desirable conference for Tarleton. Photo from southland.org
“Some representatives from the WAC came to Tarleton a couple of months ago just for an informal visit to see what the campus looked like and to meet with our athletic director,” Dottavio said. “There’s been nothing formal with them since 2003 when Tarleton was considered for membership in the Southland conference, and since that time, it’s been primarily informal conversations between the athletic directors of the conference and our athletic director.”
Tarleton State to the WAC might happen. Just need to find a place for football. Tarleton State prefers the Southland, but since that conference is full, they could be in placed until a vacancy comes their way to join them in the future.

Just as they were in 2012 when they were trying to save football. That’s why I’m very confident that there is no screaming desire for the Big Northwest type FBS league.

The WAC has been actively negotiating with the Braille School of Trucking to join, but this hey declined as they are going to join the Great North Conference.

RE: WAC Is Very Interested In Tarleton State
Would the Southland let them in for football only and let the WAC handle the rest?

All the WAC travel partners are that far apart for the most part already.

We've talked about this on every Tarleton expansion thread. The league needs members bad. Commissioner Hurd said last month that they are "initiating an aggressive membership campaign".
The question I keep asking is what does that mean? Aggressive campaign sounds like they have feelers out to multiple schools. I can't imagine many D1 schools are willing to leave their stable conference for the WAC. That leaves you with D2 schools like Tarleton.
Based on conversations on the D2 board, there is not much chatter from schools west of the Mississippi with the exception of Tarleton (Texas) and Augustana (South Dakota).

Texas A&M-Commerce, Texas A&M-Kingsville and Angelo State also have did some feasibility studies to go to D1 in recent years. Southland wanted Angelo State instead of Incarnate Word the last time. The public Texas schools were not ready to move up the last time. Seems like with the LSC being overflowing, you might see some defection from the football members.

If 4-5 Lonestar schools come up as a block they can make it work. If the Southland isn't interested in their FB teams there's always the Big South.

We beat this to death on the WAC board already, but if it would help induce 4-5 Lone Star schools to move up together and joined the WAC, the conference could consider sponsoring FCS football. To be assured of reaching the six-team minimum it would also need UTRGV to start football, and/or someone else (USD? Cal Poly? UCD? Sac State?) to join as a football affiliate.

I like this idea and both UTRGV and GCU could do it. The other option is bringing in Azusa Pacific at the same time.

Might add Dixie State, Colorado Mesa and CSU-Pueblo that could help out to.

They don't need a D1 study and facilities are not a factor, every D2 west of the Mississippi is a target for the WAC.

What makes you think they'd stop at the Mississippi?

They were going to take New Jersey Tech at one point so they wouldn't...
