RE: WAC commits 2018-19
I know GCU fans are ready to say WAC championship is theirs automatically cause of "stars" but like I have chastised Frank for going off about recruits and their stars I'll say the same thing to GCU fans. Games are played on the court, not on paper. Siakam was a 2 star prospect, Ian Baker, 2 stars, Lofton 2 stars, and Jermerio Jones, 2 stars. We have had many 3+ stars that have been a big bust so don't get to to happy just yet.

RE: WAC commits 2018-19
Some players are naturally talented like Pascal Siakam. And other player excel within a specific system. I don't think it will be as clear cut in evaluating NMSU's recruiting classes under Jans. Menzies recruited a lot of 3-star players but he never got them to perform (defensively) as well as Jans team last season. And, Lofton and Jones were considered 2-star players. So, on paper GCU recruiting class does admittedly look impressive. But I think there are coaches in this conference now who are good evaluator of talent and know what type of players fit their respective systems regardless of stars by their names.

RE: WAC commits 2018-19
With JJ Rhymes joining the Lopes, I think there is a good chance Oscar Frayer gets moved over to the two guard position to open up a starting slot for Rhymes at the wing. It is simply labels of positions on a chalk board but Majerle probably needs to find a way to get both Frayer and Rhymes on the court at the same time in order to keep both happy (with their minutes). I already see both Lever and M. Finke starting at center and power forward respectively. Both have a similar skillset (stretch players) but Finke is a tad quicker of the two. The only position Majerle can still upgrade for next season is the point guards role. I would not be surprised if Majerle signs another grad transfer to man the point guard position. Damari Milstead is a good player but he is still a little green behind the ear (as a little used sophomore-to-be) to lead such a veteran crew.

Show me one GCU fan who is ready to say WAC championship is automatically theirs because of stars. Sounds like an Aggie fan move to me. Now, if we change all of these commitments to NMSU, I can hardly imagine the chest thumping that would be going on:

- i'm sure we'd have thread upon thread of YouTube highlight videos and proclamations of WAC POY frontrunner for at least half of them.
- We'd be told time and again about Michael Finke was contacted by 60 schools, had 15 in-home visits, and still chose NMSU over the likes of Stanford, Vanderbilt, Penn State, and Nevada.
- We'd have to comsistently hear about Carlos Johnson & Isiah Brown like they are some kind of boogey men for the entire year they have to sit, like we did will AJ Harris.
- We'd be constantly reminded about the high school accolades of Tim Finke & JUCO accolades of Rhymes.
- Jans would be crowned among NMSU's all-time greatest recruiters.
- SURELY the Aggies would be proclaimed WAC champions for the 2018-19 season, and probably far beyond.
- We would all be thought foolish or "purple kool-aid drinkers" for expecting otherwise.

If I am misreading the situation and nobody thinks any of this would be going on here if the shoe were on the other foot, please let me know and I'll pull this down. As it stands, I don't think I've seen anything other than reasonable excitement about signing talented players from GCU fans. We leave the insecurity masked as bravado to other fans bases.

Most of your assumptions would be correct. You would hear a lot of that from Aggies fans. However, keep in mind, NMSU already has a track record of success. So, Aggie fans are confident the players signed by NMSU (regardless of stars) will make an impact in the WAC; some being POTY candidates. Also, Aggie fans never have to hear from their head coach that his players lack toughness; we win a lot. We have been fortunate to have hired four consecutive "successful" head coaches since joining the WAC. There is an expectation by Aggie fans that whomever our coach is at the time, he will be one of the best (if not the best coach) in the conference in all facets of the game; and that includes recruiting.

As an Aggie, I believe Majerle is having a very successful signing period. He has signed a lot of talent. However, like NMSU with Menzies early on, I think GCU is endure growing pain with Majerle; as being a first time college head coach. Majerle is quick to put the blame on his players when they fall short. But until proven otherwise, I think Majerle's inability to instill mental toughness in his players is a reflection of Majerle's (his deficiencies) as a head coach.

If NMSU wins the WAC this coming season it will be nothing new; based on past history. However, with the players Majerle has signed recently, it would not reflect well on him as a head coach if GCU finishes second or third again. Majerle talks a good game but the proof is in the pudding. It is time for him to put up or...

Pistol Pete, I usually have great respect for what you say on these blogs, but you lost me on this one. Sounds like you are setting it up so that if GCU wins the WAC then it was all because of the great signing class (not Majerle's coaching), and if GCU finishes second or third again then it is all Majerle's fault. That is too much mental gymnastics for me. I guess Majerle is damned if he wins and damned if he loses.

If GCU wins, they will have earned it. I'm just tired of Majerle laying the blame for key losses on his player's toughness. I've seen Majerle make a lot of questionable coaching calls over the past few years. And, in some cases, his player rotations and coaching decisions cost the GCU team a win. It is not just on the players as Majerle would have his followers believe. No way in hell GCU should have lost to Mercer to close out their season. GCU was more talented than Mercer... and playing at home.

Last season, Jans took the blame for the Aggie loss to USC. He felt he did not set up his team for success late in that game; and admitted he needed to do better moving forward. Jans is a fierce competitor but he expects more from himself as a coach than he does from his players.

Majerle knows what the endgame is for GCU; become like Gonzaga. I'm just not sure Majerle is anywhere as good of a coach as he thinks he is... or even close to Mark Few's rare air.

Back to recruiting... I am pleased GCU is getting some real good players. It helps the WAC as a whole.

RE: WAC commits 2018-19
If I were a GCU fan this last recruit would excite me the most. This Trey guy is the real deal. He can shoot way better than Benson, and he can rebound too. Congrats on this kid. This Trey guy from Western Washington is the real deal.

As far as all the GCU fans crying that Aggie fans are not going banana's over your recruiting class, forgive us. If you look back on my post I have chastised Frank when he rants about stars and how many schools were after a player. That's what UNM Lobo fans do too and they haven't been to the NCAA in five years. Majerle will NEVER make GCU another Gonzaga. Trust me. He may at some point win the WAC and even go to the dance as a 16 seed. NMSU has had success but we by no means are we a Gonzaga either. Forgive Aggie fans if we don't react to the purple propaganda with as much enthusiasm as GCU fans. I heard it all last year about it being GCUs year last year. Benson was from a final 4 team, Braun was preseason MVP, and GCU was preseason to win the WAC and then reality set in. 3rd place finish with a 8-6 conference record. Congrats to what seems like a good recruiting class but your mini Messiah Majerle is not a good coach for so many reasons that I'm too tired to list here. Finke btw is a 3 star. If GCU fans want to be taken seriously quit sugar coating everything. I'm not talking about GCU posters here.. You guys are the small segment of your fanbase that doesn't look like teenage girls screaming and crying at a Shawn Mendes concert, cause that's what your fanbase looks like when Majerle is around.

1) To be like Gonzaga you have to win and make deep runs in the tournament. No other mid major out west has done this outside of the Zags.

2) You know who Shawn Mendes is? Not sure why I find this funny. You could be the only Aggie loving, USU/GCU/UNM/Bake hating Shawn Mendes fan. 03-wink

NMSU was also recruiting 6'6 JUCO Marlon Taylor; who was ranked #17 in the JC Top 100 just ahead of Rhymes. However, he chose LSU a few days ago.

Currently, NMSU has 6'8 JUCO forward Iván Aurrecoechea coming into LC for a visit. He is ranked #10 in the JC Top 100. He doesn't play the same position as Rhymes but Aurrecoechea would fill a need for NMSU. He is a top 5 rebounder (11.5 rpg) in JC ball.

Bakersfield!?? Whose that? Oh yeah, that team that got lucky a couple of years and now sucks in every sport going to the Big West? Naw. Don't hate them. UNM is about the only team I hate. I don't even hate Utep or GCU. With GCUs recruiting area, market, and online school funding I they should excel. I welcome the budding rivalry between the two schools. However, even with all that what you think is your greatest asset is your greatest liability...Dan Majerle

6'6 PG who averaged 15/7/4 last season and chose GCU over 14 other D1 offers, which included finalists Cal Baptist, Liberty, Santa Clara, and Winthrop? Yes, GCU fans are very aware and look forward to Trey's contributions in 2018-19.

Utah Valley added D1 transfer point guard Brandon Averette (5'11, 175, Jr) from Oklahoma State. Looks like he will need to redshirt next season. But he is a good pick up for UVU's future. UVU also added walk-on Austin Denham (6'3, 195, Jr). He averaged 15.8 ppg at Scottsdale CC.
