Right now you’ve got guys like Montero, Chamberlain, etc playing decent despite only having 6 weeks of college strength and conditioning. Imagine if we could get 5-6 guys to join the program in January and have 7 months under their belt by the time the next season started. That’d be huge.

Forgive my ignorance, but how does this work?

Does the player have to graduate HS before attending Rice?

Essentially, you graduate HS in 3.5 years. Apparently, this isn’t very difficult at lots of high schools (it wouldn’t have been allowed at mine).

This isn’t something that only the “factories” do... Lots of solid academic schools also do this.

Here’s an article about it: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.sbnatio...recruiting

That’s helpful. Thanks!

I don’t see any reason why we wouldn’t want to do this, and presumably Bloomgren is familiar with it from Stanford. Has anyone heard of early enrolled in the upcoming class?

It seems like academically elite schools like Rice would be at a bit of a disadvantage because the students they accept typically will come from more rigorous high schools and I assume those schools would be less likely to allow early graduation. I know my HS did not allow it. Obviously there are exceptions and there are SOME a student athletes who could be admitted to Rice as early enrollees.

We had at least two that I know of during my undergrad days.

Rice has very very limited summer school selection if I remember correctly. One of the big disadvantages to being so small, we can’t find majors or summer class for some prospective athletes. The only summer class I remember anyone taking was organic chemistry at UH because it was so much easier than Rice and premeds wanted a higher GPA.
