totally banning freshman parking kind of sucks. I get encouraging them to live on campus but even then they kind of need a car to live in Birmingham

One might even think it would decrease freshman enrollment.

That's just dumb. Some students can't afford to live on campus.

I was a commuter student, and I never bought a parking pass during my (extended) UAB attendance. Maybe I can give an informational workshop to share all my tricks and tips (buy comfortable shoes and an umbrella...take early classes).

All my secret parking spots have been replaced with a building.

well, if you read the article they are working with the city to put in permitted parking even on the streets. I'm shocked it's taken them this long, even in tiny Montevallo you can't park on the street in the adjacent residential neighborhood without a city issued resident parking permit

that's somewhat of an aspect of it (I mean, it is dumb to make a freshman from Homewood or Hoover live on campus) but even if they can afford it, and do live on campus, Birmingham isn't exactly the kind of city you can live a car free lifestyle. With Publix it's a lot easier to live downtown/southside without a car but christ it will be so boring, or super expensive when you have to take an uber everywhere

Do you have any idea how crowded the hill is nowadays? You’d have a better chance finding street parking right in front of your building.

At some point, I guess we stopped using BlazerTalk for discussion and just moved to sarcastic joke comments without context.

The idea is for students to find a way to make it work for them today.

If it means parking in the parking lot on the other side of 65 so be it.
If it means getting there early to find a spot, so be it.

Or maybe, jeez, I don't know, maybe they could buy a parking permit

That's how FSU loss Stanley Owens one of the best States running backs back in early 90's his Juco Team lost him they banned Freshman Parking, and cars entirely for freshman. Man he would of been great. Turned out not to be so great cause of the rule. Man lost a good one he was better then James Johnson that went to MSU and the Dolphins although he lasted one year with them.

You should cater to Freshman not take away from them, they are the blood line of the School, with out Freshman you don't get to be a sophomore or junior or Senior or a Grad Student then a professional in your profession.

One of the signs your school has outgrown its campus space is when student parking becomes a topic of serious question. "Green space" vs "paved parking space" becomes a choice for debate. For UAB to grow to be a national undergraduate school, it must solve that problem of limited space and growing enrollment. Banning a class of students from having a car has not worked as a long term solution at many schools, and parking decks are expensive for building and additional security concerns.

Both of my kids' universities had the same thing. Freshman must live on campus and no car. My daughter's school had an exception if the family lived in the local area.

I'm glad the new decks on their radar, but these need to be built now not reassessed in a couple years.
